“Oh please,” Mrs. Tzelik scoffs. “He doesn’t act like any Zvezdi I’ve seen. For all we know that Petrz was off mating with beasts to—”

“Asili was inseminated in a lab,” Vahadr interrupts, and the way his tone dips sounds ten times more frightening than if he were to yell. “No amount of infidelity would change the fact that he is full-blooded Zvezdi, and fully my son. I love him as he is, and I do not require your approval on the matter.”

As he gently nudges Asili towards me and takes one last step closer to his mother, my stomach drops like a ton of bricks. Full-blooded Zvezdi…

I look down at the half-human boy before me. Half-cast, as that lady at the birthday party days ago had said. Half-human and different. What if his heritage singles him out more? What if it makes people look down on him even more?

I hadn’t thought of this before, but what if it changes the way that Vahadr looks at him? The way he’d just said full-blooded Zvezdi,as if the alternative was unthinkable…

I pull Asili into my side, but he barely reacts except to allow me to draw him close, as if he’s on autopilot.

“Now, if you please, Mother,” Vahadr continues so quietly that it’s almost a whisper. “Get out of my home.”
