She stares at me, her eyes alight with thought mingled with arousal as they flick over my features. I can almost see her puzzling the pieces together.
“That guy in the basement the other day,” she says after a time. “With the missing finger. That was Olentr Kuznezhen, wasn’t it.” She states it like a fact, not a question, and I lift my brows. “You had him killed?”
“Yes.”
“Vahadr, that’s… why would you do that?”
“Really,” I say, and it comes out as somewhat of a drawl as I drop my lips to her neck. “You want to know why I punish the wicked and protect the vulnerable?”
“But—”
“No, Analina. For as long as I’m in charge of this planet, the safety of its people is my priority. I won’t allow anyone under my protection to be exploited.”
“Okay, but…” Her fingers come up to grasp at my jacket as I let my tongue explore her skin once more. “But I just mean, you…have a perfectly functioning justice system…”
I nip lightly at her throat and let my hands trail a little higher up her body. “Fortunately for the rich or well connected, it is not so difficult to circumvent that system.”
“V-Vahadr…” She pushes me back and attempts to frown, which, of course, only makes her look more attractive. “I’m serious, you can’t just take advantage of your role like that.”
“Males like Olentr have wanted me gone since I first stepped into the office, because I will not allow the corruption of my father’s era and before to continue any longer. I am not taking advantage of my role as ruler and protector of the people when I stop him from harming others.”I let the fingers of one hand cup the weight of her breast in my palm while the other continues around to her spine and down. “I take advantage when I force attractive university students into my employment and then ravage them in the corridors.”
She huffs and her glare deepens. “That’s another thing, actually—”
I kiss her in an unashamed bid to end her argument, wondering idly if there is any female on this sphere or others who would so insist on mixing mating and morality like this.
By the time I draw my lips from hers, plump and swollen and red from my attentions, her eyes look dazed and she seems willing to drop the subject for now, and I realize I can’t quite remember myself what the issue may have been.
I lift a hand to her face, pushing her curls behind her ear with a sigh. “For the next few days, you and Asili are to stay with me behind these walls where I can keep you safe.”
She opens her mouth and I frown, tilting her chin up suddenly and cutting her off. “This is not up for debate. If it were not for my son, I would be out there instead of Kyrin, making this right, and you would be free to disobey me all you wished. As it is, however…I will cuff you to the bed if you do not comply, and I’ll enjoy every minute of it. Do you understand me?”
Her dark brows raise and she smiles faintly, resting one hand flat against my stomach. “I was just gonna say that I can take my classes online for a while, but okay, Officer Stern.”
I puff out a breath and return her expression. “I see. Well, good, I suppose.”
“We can revisit the cuff idea later?”
I lean in to kiss her again. “When you allow me between your thighs once more, you may have whatever you wish.”
“Jesus Christ, Vahadr…”
