“Hello, Taylor.”

“Eric, this is ridiculous.”

He removed his glasses and cleaned them with his tie. “It is ridiculous that you would date someone like that football player. It is embarrassing for everyone involved.”

“You have to talk to the Dean,” I said, desperation creeping into my voice. I could feel it all slipping away from me, and I would do anything to get it back. “If you refuse to pick up the class, then he’ll have to let me keep it. We’re the only two professors who can teach it.”

“I could do that…” he considered. “Yes. I think I will.”

“Yes! Eric, thank you for—”

“If you break up with him.”

I froze. He was staring at me now with total sincerity.

“It’s for your own good,” he said. “Break up with the athlete. You two will probably break up regardless, considering how well men like him are able to keep steady relationships. So it might as well be now. Do this, and I will tell the Dean to give you back your class.”

I stood and rounded my desk. “Eric, I can’t do that. Please, just talk to the Dean. You know this is all being blown out of proportion.”

“On the contrary. I think this is being treated with the exact amount of seriousness it deserves. It is insulting to have a member of the faculty shaking her… her… behind around on the weekends, and then teaching a class on Radiological Dating the next day.” He sneered. “But it appears you crave the spotlight so much that—”

My hand acted like it had a mind of its own, lashing out and slapping my ex across the cheek. His mouth hung open after, like he was shocked that I had done something.

“Resorting to violence?” He snickered. “It appears the meathead is rubbing off on you. I hope, for your sake, you will consider my offer when you are less emotional.”

He left my office, and then I was truly alone.
