“Not really in the mood to talk about it,” I said.

“Fine. You got plans this Friday?”

“Don’t think so. Why?”

“You haven’t responded to the Halloween invite,” Dallas pointed out.

“That’s ‘cause I’m not going,” I replied, sinking into my couch. “Don’t feel much like celebrating. I need fewer distractions, not more. Otherwise I’ll never get out of this slump.”

Dallas sat on the edge of the recliner across from me. “Thought you didn’t want to talk about it?”

I shrugged it off.

“Come to the party,” Dallas said. “It’ll be good for you. And for the team. Everyone wants to see you there. It would be weird if you didn’t come. You’re always the life of the party.”

“Only when I’m in a good mood,” I said. “This year? I’ll probably be a downer.”

“Then come for me,” he tried. “It’s important to me. Okay?”

There was a strange insistence in his voice. Like this party was very important to him for some reason. I could tell he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

“Yeah, all right,” I said. “I’ll swing by.”

“That’s more like it.” He got up, which caused Luna to run over to him again. He scratched the husky behind the ears and said, “Slumps come and go…”

“What’d I say?” I warned.

“I know, I know. All I’m gonna say is this. We’re your teammates, Brody. And more importantly, we’re your friends. We’re with you through the good times, and the bad. All right? You’re never alone, no matter what you’re dealing with.”

“Yeah, I know,” I said. “Thanks.”

But even though I knew he was right, I felt awfully alone without Taylor in my life.
