“Threatened you, how?” the detective clarified.

“He told me to drop all my passes in Sunday’s game, or else. Then he started saying I deserve this for…” He trailed off.

“For what?”

“He didn’t get a chance to finish. That’s whenshetackled him from behind.” He gave me a grateful smile.

“I was downstairs investigating the fire alarm,” I explained. “I told Luke not to open the door for anyone.”

“I didn’t open it,” Luke replied. “I heard the key in the lock. That’s why I thought it was you returning.”

Shit. The attacker had a key somehow. Did he work for the apartment complex, or did he make a copy some other time, like when Luke was at practice?

“Here’s what I don’t understand,” the detective reasoned. “If this guy had a key, why start the fire as a distraction? He could’ve waited until you were asleep, then let himself in.”

“I don’t know…”

“I do,” I said, grimacing. “It’s because I’m here. I thought I felt someone watching us when we got home from dinner. He must have seen me, and decided he needed a way to separate me from Luke. He knew that if the fire alarm was triggered, I would leave the apartment to investigate it.” I balled my hand into a fist. “He played me like a fiddle.”

The detective promised us that a patrol car would keep an eye on the building overnight, then he and the other cops departed. The apartment was quiet in their absence.

“I… I need to go lay down,” Luke said. “All of this is starting to hit me.”

“Want some company?” I quickly asked. I was still on cloud nine from the orgasm, but I longed for more than that.

“I think I just need to be alone,” he replied. “Don’t take it personally. Everything we did was amazing. But… I just need to be alone. Is that okay?”

I bit back my disappointment. “Understood. But I’m here for you in case you don’t want to feel… alone.”

Luke smiled. “I know. Having you here is the only thing keeping me sane.” He wrapped me in a hug. It was the kind of hug that was given with his entire body, holding me tightly. I closed my eyes and savored how sturdy his body felt. I didn’t want the hug to end.

He pulled away, but only a little bit. His arms were still wrapped around me, and he gazed down at me with warmth. “Hey, Caz?”

“Yeah?” I breathed.

“Thanks,” Luke replied. “For saving my life.”

I shrugged. “Just doing my job.”

He hesitated as if not sure what to do. I sensed that he wanted more. That he wanted the same thing I did, to rush into the bedroom and have another shot at what we tried on the floor. But then he pulled away completely and disappeared alone.

I wasn’t discouraged by his abrupt departure. After our fight in the kitchen, I felt like I finallyunderstoodLuke. I could appreciate why he was so angry at me for lying to him. And I hoped that after a few days to clear his mind, we could start over.

I don’t know what we are,I thought with a smile.But I like it.

For once, I fell asleep almost instantly.

Luke

For once, I couldn’t fall sleep.

Part of it was the attack. I was a mess of adrenaline as I replayed the whole thing over and over. Having a gun shoved in my face made me think about things differently. It forced me to come to terms with my own mortality, something I had never done before. I had always felt invincible. Until tonight. It put things in perspective. That’s why it was so easy to forgive Cazzie and finally give in to the feelings that had been eating at me.

That was the real reason I couldn’t fall asleep. I kept thinking abouther. The kiss, and the more-than-just-a-kiss, that we shared on the floor. The perfect way she gripped my cock and tugged me to an orgasm that made my eyes water. I caught a glimpse of the mess I made on Cazzie’s belly before she darted off to the bathroom. I wasn’t sure I had ever come so much before.

I was awoken the next morning by conversation. When I emerged from my room, I found Cazzie and the detective assigned to our case sipping coffee in the kitchen.
