Or that his eyes had gotten deep and dark like they had when they were dating. When they were naked and reaching for each other.

She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination or not.

There was part of her that hoped it was and another part that wished it wasn’t.

She wasn’t one that liked to feel this way about anything in life.

“I don’t know. I need to think about it some more. Thanks for talking with me though.”

“Any time,” Lily said. “Do you want more wine?”

“Maybe a half a glass.” She’d have another when she was home tonight and hope that it put her to sleep so she didn’t stay up thinking about Ren and what went wrong like she had so much in her life.

To Share Or Not

“Hello,” Ren said quickly when his phone rang.

“Hey, Ren. Everyone okay? Am I interrupting something?”

His heart started to slow down. “Sorry, Dee. Force of habit when I see your name come up on my phone. I usually think something is wrong with Max.”

“No,” Dee said, laughing. “But Max is why I’m calling. I want to see how my little buddy is doing in a new place. I’m sure he’s fine.”

“He is,” he said. There was part of him that was conflicted like Zara had said. He didn’t want his son upset or worried he was being left, but the other part of him wondered if his son missed him.

He needed to get that crap out of his head.

Max was always thrilled to see him when he picked him up at the end of the day.

His son’s chubby legs were kicking and swinging and there’d be a massive grin on his cheeks that his Daddy came for him.

He never thought it would feel so good to see that. More so when he was first presented with the fact he had a kid and Max was just left with him.

Instructions were on a piece of paper. Two boxes of clothes and some toys and that was it. Nothing more.

It made him sick to think of that when he realized everything his son had now. That his six weeks of life were summed up in two boxes and on a single sheet of paper.

“And you’re happy about that but bummed you could walk away, right?”

“That about sums it up,” he said.

“Colin wants to talk to you now. I told him I had to find out how Max was doing first.”

He waited a second until his best friend and coworker got on the phone with him. “How is it going there?”

“Could be worse,” he said.

That was the solid truth.

Ren wasn’t sure what he expected to feel. He was pretty sure he’d built it up in his head to be worse than it was. At least in dealing with his mother and the business.

With Zara, he hadn’t been able to figure a thing out.

He’d only seen her one other time, the first day when he picked up Max. Tuesday, Caroline greeted him at the door to get Max and the same when he picked his son up. This morning too.

“That’s better than a needle in the toenail,” Colin said. He always said that and it made him laugh.
