When he came out Zara had the kitchen put back together. “You know,” he said. “I feel bad that all I did was put you to work today. And it’s been a long day.”

“I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t want to,” she said, going into his arms. “Just like I’ve been waiting to do this all day too.”

“You should have said something,” he said, his hands going around her waist. “God, your skin is so soft.”

“Lily’s products,” she said. “I use everything they’ve got.”

“That is why you smell so good too,” he said, leaning his head down to sniff her neck. At first he’d thought it was baby powder that rubbed off from other kids at the daycare or something but now realized it was flowers.

“It is,” she said.

His lips touched hers. Her mouth opened and his tongue slid in.

He knew they were going to end up standing here kissing like they’d done before. He was going to have to get used to it and that she was taking her time before they took the next step.

When her hands went under his shirt though, he wondered if maybe she was ready to move forward.

He didn’t get that chance though when Max started to cry.

“Shit,” he said. “I need to go see what is wrong. He never cries after I lay him down.”

“I should go,” she said. “Text me tomorrow about dinner with your mom.”

He sighed. He didn’t want her to leave, but they’d been together for close to twelve hours today. “Sure,” he said. “Have a good night.”

She gave him one more kiss and he turned and walked quickly to see what was going on with Max.

The minute he hit the doorway he knew, the smell knocking him in the face as if he walked into an invisible wall surrounding a septic tank.

“Seriously, Max. You have the worst timing.”

Second Chance

“You’re here bright and early,” Lily said when she opened the door on Sunday. “Oh, and you’ve got muffins. What kind?”

“Aunt Zara,” Willow said as she ran in the room. “Yum. What did you make?”

“Raspberry muffins. Your favorite.”

“And mine,” Zane said, walking into the kitchen where she’d set them down. She’d come in the front door and walked to the back with Lily. “What is it you’ve got to tell me? Or ask me to do?”

She should have figured Zane would get right to the point. “Nothing to do,” she said.

Zane opened the container and pulled out a muffin, then went to get a cup hanging by the Keurig and started his coffee. She figured she might as well help herself too.

“Then you need to tell me something,” he said. “Do I get to guess?”

She picked Willow up and gave her a kiss, then put her down. Her niece was getting so big. “Sure, you can guess.”

Lily got a few plates down and put a muffin on one for Willow and set it in front of the stool on the island next to where Zara had sat down.

“You’re dating Ren,” he said.

“Did Rose tell you?”

“My sister knows?” Lily asked with her hands on her hips. “That’s not fair. You can’t ever get anything out of her short of Poppy sitting on her and me forcing her mouth open.”
