Page 68 of A Return For Ren

“Why?” he asked.

“Because they have less time than me. They work and have kids. I know what it’s like to need time to do stuff for the business on the weekends. Most are trying to make up for the time they missed with their kids during the week or get everything done in the house that they are too tired to do during the week.”

He snorted. “Yeah. I suppose working from home I’ve got that covered. I’m doing a lot more laundry and have more things to clean up. I’ve always been able to do it during the day in between things so I’m not trying to cram it in. But the weekend is spent doing more household things. Mowing the lawn, which isn’t easy with a kid.”

She laughed. “I’m sure you do it when he’s napping.”

“Exactly. I’ve got the monitor on me and rush to get it done. I feel like I rush to do a lot.”

She reached over and slapped her hand on his thigh. “It’s not always a bad thing.”

It seemed their time together to get naked was rushed too. It was always at his house and since his bedroom was next to Max’s they were as quiet as could be or they were in the living room on the couch without much elbow room.

It would be nice tonight to feel like they didn’t have to put a clock on being intimate. It’d also be the first night they’d sleep together the entire night.

He laughed at her. “I’ll make it up to you tonight. I promise.”

“It’s all good, Ren.”

She felt like it had been going well.

They spent enough time together. She didn’t feel like she was missing anything or needed more and she was sure he felt the same way.

They both had other things they needed to deal with, but they kept in communication.

Even when they were dating years ago they weren’t in each other’s pocket often.

They had friends they did things with apart or together. She always thought that was what made for a healthy relationship.

Yet things didn’t work out so well before.

And she had to get those thoughts out of her head.

They were kids back then. No one could figure her and Ren’s lives would be like they were now.

She’d had no idea she’d own her own business. Her plan was to be a teacher like her mother was.

She’d start her day at eight, then be home by three, do a little bit of work at night, then have summers off. Easy.

She found that she wanted to be her own boss though.

That took a lot more work, bigger headaches, and less time off.

But she made a lot more money. As long as she was full. And she was or had been since she opened.

A few weeks of an open slot here or there wasn’t the end of the world.

When her mother was in town for the warmer months, she’d come in and help out if she was short staffed too.

She’d found she was able to make it work for years. For a lot of things in life.

“I’m glad,” he said. “Zane hasn’t said anything to you about seeing me earlier in the week?”

She sighed. “He called me last night. It had more to do with something I needed him to look at at the daycare. While we were on the phone he said he’d seen you and it was all good. Why? What happened?”

“Nothing happened,” he said. “I told you.”

He’d said that he’d sought Zane out. They talked and the awkwardness was gone. She wasn’t sure she was buying that, but then Zane never said a word about the meeting at all so she had to go with it.
