“Could be,” he said. “Or he was tired. Yesterday was a long exciting day for him.”
“Not long enough that he got up in the middle of the night though,” she said.
“I heard him moving. If you weren’t with me I would have let him go to see if he went back to sleep, but I didn’t want to wake you last night. I’m used to this.”
Which was sweet on his end. “I wouldn’t have minded. Please don’t worry about that. I don’t want you doing anything different with him because I’m around.”
“It’s fine. He was happy enough to get a drink of something and fell right back to sleep.”
“I thought if he saw me he might want to play. That is why I jumped back.”
Ren laughed. “I was wondering what that was about. I don’t think my kid is going to know what we were doing last night so there is no reason for you to be embarrassed.”
She felt her face fill with heat though. The embarrassment still came.
It wasn’t just in the shower that they’d fooled around but in his bed after. A few times.
Who knew how much the body could take of sex when you found the right person that you were compatible with in what it seemed was every way when naked.
“I wasn’t thinking about embarrassment last night.”
“Then why is your face red now?” he asked.
“NowI’m thinking about last night and what we did.”
“It was good, wasn’t it?” he asked, his eyebrows wiggling. She always loved this playful side to him that not many saw.
She saw it though. Not as often as she wished but was so glad to see he had it and was exercising it around her.
“It was very good. I’ve had a great weekend. I hope you did.”
“I have,” he said. “Eat. Let me get you some coffee. Do you drink coffee? Why don’t I know that?”
“Because we haven’t been around each other yet where coffee was involved. I only drink it in the morning before I start my day. I’m going to say you do too since I haven’t seen you drinking coffee either?”
“I have a few cups in the morning when I’m working. Not always. Depends on how tired or busy I am. Nothing after midmorning though.”
She went over to his one-cup machine and made hers. “Do you have sugar? I know there is no milk or cream here. I noticed that last time and it’d be bad by now anyway.”
He opened a cabinet and pulled out a box of powdered creamer in packets. It would do the trick. “You are wondering why I’ve got them there, aren’t you?”
“It’s not my business,” she said. “It’s obvious you’ve been with other women in the past fifteen years.”
He sighed. “I have. Believe it or not though, those are for Dee.”
“What?” she asked.
“After Max was dropped off, I was having a hard few weeks. She was here the minute after Rachelle left, followed by Colin.”
“I find that both sweet and lovely.”
“Loyalty,” he said. “They’ve got it. They’ve been my rock. I think the other part was they couldn’t believe it until they saw it.”
“I can imagine the shock of it from everyone.”
“You really can’t,” he said.
Which reminded her again that there was more to Ren than she saw or that he was letting her see.
