“Kate.” Emrys crossed the room and pulled me in for a hug. I went willingly into his arms, leaning against him and accepting his familiar warmth.

“You summoned Merlon,” I murmured for his ears alone.

“I did not.” His arms tightened. “He came for a different purpose, and I requested he examine you before he left.”

I leaned back so I could see his expression. “So he can reaffirm what I already suspect? There is still no child.” Tears blurred my vision. I brushed them aside and blinked. Where had those come from? I rarely cried.

“Darling.” Emrys’ hands caressed my cheeks before his fingers slid through my hair, upsetting the arrangement my maid had worked so hard to achieve that morning. “I never meant to hurt you.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Forgive me?”

“Of course.” Sniffling at the sudden moisture, I tried to blink away the tears. “Now, we should get on with it. We are embarrassing Merlon.”

The healer snorted loudly. “Have you spent any time around Casimir and his wife? They are far worse. Now tell me about your symptoms.”

A few moments later, Merlon had his hands bracketing my middle, and the subtle prickling sensation of his magic embraced me. “Interesting,” he muttered. Then, saying an Elvish word that I didn’t recognize, he shifted the spell. The color changed and his eyebrows rose. “Intriguing.”

“What?” Emrys demanded from behind me.

With a quick series of movements, Merlon disassembled the spell before pinning me with a searching look. “Do you want to tell him, or shall I?”

I frowned. “But you said it was impossible.”

“I said unlikely,” he protested.

“What?” Emrys’ hands closed around my shoulders, pulling me back into the warmth of his body.

Merlon lifted his gaze to meet the king’s. “Your wife is with child, a son.”

Emrys wrapped his arms around me and spun me in a circle.

“Emrys!” I protested.

After setting me on my feet, he turned me around. Gently taking my face between his large hands, he kissed me with exquisite sweetness. Breaking off gently, he rested his forehead against mine. “I love you,” he whispered for my ears alone.
