“I’m Scarlet.”

“Yeah, I heard.”

I forced back the building sob and said, “We’ve been together for a little over two years.” That knife twisted deeper, and the pain burned hotter when denial and irritation fell over his expression. “We’re getting married in a few months.”

“No.”

Justno.

One word that had me wrapping an arm around my waist in an attempt to alleviate the churning in my stomach.

“Chase—”

“Stop saying my name like you know me,” he snapped, then dragged a hand over his face. “This is all some fucked-up joke. Some prank my family’s playing on me because of what happened—what they think I did to Harper. But I wouldn’t...I never would’ve cheated on her.”

Funny how I’d never once been jealous of the girl who was practically family to the Graysons. Until today. Probably because she’d been there before I had. Always there for family days and holidays—a permanent fixture.

Then again, I’d never worried about women in general with Chase because he’d treated me like the world revolved around me from the beginning.

And now he was breaking my heart and making me question everything over memories his subconscious had created.

“Chase, none of that...it’s like Bree said. Harper isn’t your girlfriend. She’snever—”

“Stop,” he demanded on a twisted plea.

I hurried to swipe at the relentless tears and tried to steady my breathing, but my body stilled at his next cold words.

“Take that off.”

I slowly looked at where his enraged stare was locked on my hand, then followed his line of sight to my engagement ring.

My heart skipped before painfully forcing another beat and then another. “What?”

“How the hell did you get that?”

“Chase...”

“I saidtake it off.”

“No,” I said through the pain and unknowns and worry.

“That isn’t yours,” he said through gritted teeth. “I was going to propose to Harper tomor—the day after the accident. Withthatring.”

I couldn’t make sense of the chaos of emotions storming my body and gripping my heart.

The denial. The medical understanding of it all. The heartbreak from his coldness and unfamiliarity. The jealousy I knew I shouldn’t be feeling...

Right?

I twisted the ring on my finger before protectively curling my right hand around it. “You bought me—”

“No.”

A hushed sob broke from me. “Chase, you gave me this ring. We’re getting married.”

“Why are you doing this?” The obvious hurt lacing his frustration kept me from responding. He pressed his fingers to his temple, his eyelids squeezing tight for a moment, but the discomfort remained on his face when he asked, “Why are all of you doing this?”

“We’re not—”
