"Arrow?" The tentative voice brought me up out of my musing.

"Hey Brex," I smiled. I didn't miss the look of relief that crossed her face before she quickly schooled her features. “What is it?”

“I’ve just come from Epione’s, and… I think you should come see for yourself.”

I stood up, porridge instantly forgotten. “Is everything okay?”

She laughed, and I relaxed. “Just come see. I don’t wish to spoil the surprise.”

Curiosity piqued; I followed her to the healing tent.

As we got nearer, the crowd began to get thicker, and I glanced over the people gathered. There was no blood, and no one seemed to be hurting; in fact, everyone was smiling and gossiping, pointing to the large tent. As I looked around and tried to make sense of this, Brex pulled me into the tent through the flaps that were tied open. My jaw dropped.

“Yes, just like that. Now, do you feel the pull inside?” Queen Mavka asked Epione, both seeming intent on their task as they stood over a grimacing young man with a bloody gash on his forearm.

“I - I do!” Epione exclaimed.

“You are acting as the conduit, now focus on that pull, and ease it into the patient.” Mavka explained. “You cannot force it, or there will be disastrous results. You must … almost cajole.”

Epione nodded as she focused on her task, and I watched in awe. The patient on the table had a bad gash on their forearm, and as I looked on, the cut began to heal before my eyes. I almost rubbed them to ensure I wasn’t dreaming.

“Moon Maiden bless us, this is astounding!” Epione exclaimed, slightly out of breath, but practically glowing. “I can save so many with this method.”

“I must caution you, though with practice you can become stronger and last longer, there will always be a cost. Be aware of your surroundings and never take too much.” Mavka said gravely.

Epione sobered and nodded. “I understand, but -”

I stumbled up to the table and glared at Brexley, who tried to look innocent but failed as she snickered into her hand.

“Why, Lady Arrow! I’m glad you’ve joined us. I feel you would also benefit from these lessons as well. What do you know of elemental magic?”

“Elemental magic?” I parroted, then winced. I needed to stop doing that.

“Yes! Elemental magic.” She smiled, “I was just teaching Epione about it.” She turned to her patient. “You may go now and be more careful!”

As the young man walked away, Queen Mavka turned to me, but Epione beat her to the punch. “It isn’t like the Moon Maiden’s magic at all, yet I think with more practice, I think the two could be used simultaneously, and even multiply the results.”

“I hadn’t considered that,” Mavka mused as she cocked her head in thought. "Mixing magic can have unexpected results, often defying the natural laws. It might be worthwhile to test it, but I wouldn't recommend it without taking precautions."

"So, let me get this straight," I interjected. "The Moon Maiden's magic, and Queen Mavka's magic are actually differenttypesof magic, and they may or may not be able to be used simultaneously for greater power?”

“Precisely! Would you care to learn?”

Does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? “What do I need to do?” Maybe this was what I felt was missing earlier.

“The root of elemental magic is based on the elements and nature. It's a trade of sorts. Nature and the elements already work together and have a seamless balance. Elemental magic taps into that, and directs it in a different direction, namely, into the bodies of our patients. It translates into energy that affects a body. Whereas Moon Maiden magic is rooted in personal power via blessings, blood, and some alchemic potions."

I digested that for a moment. "So, I tap into the elemental balance and 'cajole' it into doing what I want?"

"That's an extreme simplification." She paused and looked around. "Follow me."

Curious, I followed as she led me outside and to a nearby tree.

"Now, place your hand on the tree."

I followed her direction, placing my hands on the tree and waited for some magic to appear.

"What do you feel?"
