I reached out to take his hand, squeezing it hard.

He needed to rest if that was the case.

The rest of the husbands piled in, talking among themselves.

“Bree went straight to bed,” I told Enzo as he looked around for his wife. He nodded and said goodnight to everyone before vacating again.

“I’ve called a friend of mine,” Lex said as he squeezed Valentina’s shoulders. “He’s an ex-FBI agent, he can call in a few favors and get us some information about Salvatore’s release and find out how many men he’s really working with.”

“Is it wise to bring the cops in?” I glanced anxiously at my husband… someone who’d killed and done horrible things.

“He’s not interested in any of this anymore, he’s retired. He’s trustworthy, don’t worry.”

“He will be here in the morning,” Logan added.

Morning was only a few hours away, so we all needed to get some sleep. I rose to my feet and pulled Aidan up with me.

He looked like he was about to fall apart.

“In which case, we should all get some rest. Please do not hesitate to let one of the staff know if you need something.” I smiled at all of them as they murmured their goodnights, and then I got my poor, broken rogue of a husband out of there.

I slammed the door to his old bedroom behind us as he wandered inside.

“Aidan?” I tried cautiously, approaching him like he was a wounded animal. I had no idea what was going on in his head.

He turned to face me at the sound of his name, but there were so many thoughts raging in his eyes I wasn’t sure he really saw me. He looked so sad. So vulnerable. I wished I could take his pain away.

I folded my arms around his stiff body and listened to his ragged breathing. “Aidan, I’m here.”

“I don’t think I can do this, Cait.”

“What?” I pulled back to look at him.

“Bury my dad… be the man he wanted me to be. Fix all of this.” He gestured wildly around himself.

“You’re a good man who loves his family… that’s all your dad ever wanted you to be.”

“No. He wanted me to take this business to the next level. He wanted me to rule these streets with an iron fist… I’m not like him, Cait,” he sobbed.

“Shh, I know. But that’s a good thing.” I took him into my arms again and reached up to stroke his hair as he buried his face in my neck.

“You’re a kinder man than him. A stronger man. You’re all the things Cullen wasn’t, and he knew that. That’s why he was so hard on you.”

“I miss him. I didn’t think I would, but I do,” he said miserably.

“I know.” I hugged him for a while longer. “You’re enough Aidan. You don’t have to be anyone but who you are.”

I caressed his back, wishing I could soothe him. His muscles were tight and knotted, I could feel it. He needed to relax.

I pulled back, taking his hand. “Let’s shower and go to bed. You need rest.”

He shook his head, frowning. “I need to end the men who did this. I need to end this.”

I smirked at him with a raised brow, but there was no amusement in it. “Do I need to get the Rohypnol out again?”

That seemed to break him out of the vengeful thoughts. He smiled, but it didn’t meet his eyes. “No, I’m good. You’re right, we need to rest.”

I led him to the bathroom and turned on the shower as he waited for me in the middle of the room. When I returned to him, he watched me the whole way, his eyes, usually so green and clear, were now murky with questions and stress.
