He unstrapped his gloves and put them away, and then we wandered hand in hand back up to his room.

It was going to be one hell of a day.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Aidan

Just before we were due to leave for church, Lex’s friend, Luke Pierce, and his wife Allie arrived.

Cops made me nervous, obviously, and even though he was retired, he still had that law enforcement stink about him.

His wife was a pretty blonde with a sweet, rounded face… she was also quite a bit younger than him. Luke had speckles of grey in his hair where she looked like she was barely in her mid-twenties.

“You were right when you guessed Salvatore paid for his release,” he told us as we all gathered in the lobby to wait for the cars. “The mayor’s re-election campaign suddenly received a large donation from an unknown source a few weeks ago. Within days, Salvatore was out.”

“Bastard,” Ella muttered under her breath. “I should have aimed a bit higher when I shot him.”

Luke flashed a look at her.

I wished she had. My dad wouldn’t be dead if she’d finished the job.

Stop… it’s not her fault.

“We knew he’d been trying to rebuild when Joseph Gallo started trying to round up the call girls, but we didn’t think he’d made much progress. Not until he teamed up with Nikolai.”

“I can’t imagine Igor Aleskov is happy about Ivan muscling in on his territory,” Enzo said.

“The opposite actually. I asked around, Igor is thinking of retiring. Ivan is taking over permanently.”

Well shit.

Even more reason to just walk awaya voice said in the back of my head. I didn’t want to be around when Ivan started making this city his own. How long would it have been before he attempted to stamp us out anyway, even without Salvatore’s involvement?

Did that make me a coward?

Lex shifted closer to his wife. “Then we need to end this today. Before Igor hands over to him.”

My eyes flickered to Luke to gauge his reaction, but there was no change in his face. Apparently, he was cool with us killing these men…

Odd.

He noticed me staring. “I’m not here as law enforcement so you can relax. I’m here to help out a friend. Now I’m not going to dirty my hands here, but I’ll get you as much information as I can.”

“Did you find out how many guys Salvatore is working with?”

“As most of his crew landed in jail, there’s not many. He must be giving the Russians a really hefty cut to be teaming up with him seeing as they hold all the leverage.”

“Well, he’s not going to get that far,” Enzo growls, menace flashing in his eyes. “He’s done. I’m not letting him waste perfectly good oxygen for a minute more.”

Vanessa… Valentina… smirked. God, I couldn’t keep that straight! One name was enough.

“Ivan is mine,” she added. “I’ve been waiting ten years to kill that bastard.”

“The cars are here, Sir.” Brady said, his mouth curling hesitantly around the word “Sir.”

I kept forgetting that I was the one in damn charge now.

“Alright, let’s go.”
