Revenge had blinded me. I should never have gone after Salvatore. I should’ve protected her. I should have just let it go…

You couldn’t do that and you know it.

More nurses pushed me from the room, and I wanted to fight them. I didn’t want Cait to be alone if she was going to die. I wanted to hold her… but if they had any shot at saving her they needed me out of the way.

“Aidan?” I looked up at the sound of my voice as Logan, Ella, Bree and Enzo raced down the hospital hallway, sidestepping over the ribbon of blood that streaked across the floor from the doors.

“Where is she?” Bree asked as they all came to a stop in front of me. They all wore identical masks of shock and worry.

“In there,” I waved my hand in the general direction of the room she’d been wheeled into. “They wouldn’t let me stay.”

“Is she going to be okay?”

“I don’t know.”

“The church has been taken care of,” Logan said. “Lex and Valentina have stayed to make sure it all burns.”

Burns.

My dad was still in there…

It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that it looked like a gang shootout between Salvatore and Ivan. The blood would be burned. The bodies disintegrated. We’d be in the clear.

In the clear as long as Cait made it… or else…

“Have they said anything?” Bree pressed again, and angry words built in my throat, but Enzo interjected.

“I’m sure they will let us know soon. Come on, let’s sit.” He directed her towards the waiting room just opposite, and pulled her into his side as they sat on the couch.

Ella followed along while Logan clapped a hand on my shoulder and herded me towards them. I was moving, but I couldn’t feel my legs.

“Ella and I will go and get you some clean clothes and pack a bag for Cait,” he said.

“Clean clothes?” I frowned at him, struggling to make the words make sense.

“You’re covered in blood, Aidan-” He stopped short as a doctor roamed past, lowering his voice. “You look like you’ve just run away from a crime scene.”

Right.

When the cops showed up, it wouldn’t help to have me covered in blood.

The story was meant to be that Salvatore and Ivan had crashed the funeral and set off the alarms, and then in the panic, shots had been fired.

Cait was never meant to be part of the mix.

I didn’t care about any of it right now. I just wanted the floor to swallow me up. If she didn’t make it…

I sat beside Bree as Ella and Logan departed, but I couldn’t find it in me to comfort her. My mind was inside that room with my wife.

Please hold on, Cait. I can’t live without you.

I could see heads running back and forth through the small pane of glass. That had to mean she was still alive right? They wouldn’t be running around like headless chickens if she was dead.

A few minutes later, a doctor emerged from the room and headed straight for us. “You’re Mr. O’Callaghan?” She asked.

My heart leapt into my throat as I nodded.

“I’m Dr. Wilmur, I’ll be looking after your wife.” She had long dark hair tied back in a ponytail, and a soothing presence about her.
