Maybe he was just mad I interrupted his make-out session.

A movement out of the corner of my eye distracted me, as a girl peeked in the small window in the classroom door.

“What?” Mr. Liu yelled, annoyed at the interruption as the girl entered.

“I have a note from the principal, she asked me to deliver it.” She crossed the room, passing the note to Mr. Liu with trembling fingers.

“Uh, Cait Malley, go to the principal’s office,” he read out dismissively, dumping the note in the trash.

I immediately flushed. What had I done? I was due in detention this evening, but that was hardly a reason to get called to the principal’s office.

I stood up my cheeks burning as the rest of the class stared at me, and hurried from the room just in time to see Bree exiting her classroom down the hall. She wore the same look of confusion that I did.

Bree as well?

“What’s going on?” Bree said as she neared me.

“No idea…”

Our confusion deepened even further when we got to the principal’s office and found Aidan sitting outside as well.

My knees locked and I stumbled, but his eyes didn’t even raise to meet me.

“What have you done now, Aidan?” Bree sighed, flopping into the chair next to him. I sat quietly in the one furthest from him.

Why was I feeling guilty?

I hadn’t done anything.

“Nothing. That I know of, anyway. I just got a note in class.”

“Us too,” Bree murmured. “You don’t think somethings happened?”

Before he could answer though, the principal appeared at the door.

“Please come in,” she said, offering us a thin smile. When we got inside, she gestured for us to sit.

“I’m not really sure how to say this. I just received a phone call from Mr. O’Callaghan. I’m afraid there’s been a terrible… accident.” She stumbled over the words, seeming unsure.

“Accident?” Aidan growled, his fingers gripping the arms of the chair.

Oh no.

If I’d been called in, that must have meant my parents were involved. Why else would I have been pulled from class?

“Yes… Miss Malley. I’m afraid your parents… they’ve-” She broke off, a crack in her voice.

“They’ve what? Are they okay?” My stomach hurtled downwards.

“Uh. No, I’m afraid not. They were taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, they didn’t make it.”

What?

My ears were ringing so loud I could barely hear what she was saying.

They were gone?

But I just saw them a few hours ago.
