Da,

Sorry. Need to get away.

I called Yale and they’ve agreed to let me in on early admission, I had enough credits to graduate early.

A

I was too stunned to speak.

He’d left… before his mother and his sister’s funeral? What kind of person did that?

Fury started fizzing in my veins. It was good. Feeling something other than numbness was good… right?

He’d used me, then abandoned his family.

“Oh… this was in his room with your name on it,” Pete muttered, brushing past me as he dumped a green velvet gift box in my hand.

What the hell?

I stared at it for a few long seconds, finally cracking it open when most of the guests had departed. Inside, nestled on the green silk pillow was a silver charm bracelet with a single charm attached, crusted in tiny green gemstones. A four-leaf clover.

What was this? Some kind of final taunt? He’d made me fall for him then stubbed me out on the floor like of his cigarettes.

I glared at the bracelet, feeling the urge to toss it across the room… but instead, I slipped it around my wrist. It would serve as a daily reminder of how stupid I’d been… and why I needed to do a better job of guarding my heart.

Aidan O’Callaghan was a different breed of monster, and if I never saw him again, it would be too soon.

The Middle…

CHAPTER NINE

Ten Years Later

Music pulsed through my body as I swayed in time to the beat.

God it was good to dance! It had been a while since I’d been able to let my hair down like this with my best friend.

I glanced over at Bree. She was dancing, but from the glazed look in her eyes, I knew she wasn’t really present. Her mind was on one thing, and one thing only.

Enzo Ricci.

I was glad I’d made it home from my last job in time to see her meet the sexy Italian a few weeks ago at her art gallery opening, but her mood right now was a bit of a bummer.

I thought it was romantic. He was so off limits to her… the heir to a rival mafia family. In fact, the same family who’d killed my parents and her mother and sister. But none of that had been Enzo’s doing. Bree was just too caught up in the past.

A little while ago, he’d shown up at her apartment bloodied and beaten by the men on our side, and she’d been glum ever since.

The song finished and she returned to our booth to finish her drink.

It was probably time to go.

I looped my arm through hers, offering her a small smile. It was a shitty position she was in. Her father was itching for a war again after years of peace, and the first sparks had already settled on the ground with the killings of a few of their men. All they were waiting for was a breeze to help them ignite. Enzo and Bree were trapped on opposite sides of the war, and she wasn’t brave enough to step over that line.

Not yet anyway.

We tripped out onto the snowy street and started to make our way up the block. We probably should have called a car, but we both knew how busy Cullen’s men were with the impending territory war to come and pick us up.
