I felt myself getting paler the longer I looked at the shiny death machine.

Flying was part of my job. I loved flying… when the plane was bigger than my shoe… this thing looked like a strong breeze would send it crashing into a mountain.

“Oh, God,” I muttered to myself, my legs already trembling.

My security exited the SUV to deal with the bags and paperwork with the airport officials before he returned and unlocked my door.

It was ridiculous.

Child lock for a fully grown adult.

I was sure that was Aidan’s instruction.

I glared at the security guy as I got out, but a shriek from the plane quickly distracted me.

I glanced up, watching Brianna appear at the doorway of the plane, already halfway through a glass of champagne.

“About time!” She yelled, “Get your ass on this plane!”

I grinned in response, checking that all of my bags, including my wedding dress, made it into the hold before I climbed the steps with shaky knees.

The flight attendant greeted me at the door, passing me my own glass of champagne as I passed by her. I gulped at it, willing it to chase away my nerves. And any thoughts of cannibalism.

As I moved into the main cabin, I first locked eyes with Aidan. He sat in the first row of seats, one ankle crossed over his knee, trying to look calm. He wasn’t succeeding.

He jumped up as I entered, pulling me into him so he could kiss my temple.

“I thought you weren’t coming, Clover,” he whispered. I could almost taste the pain in his voice.

“With you around, you don’t have to worry about me not coming.” I winked at him in an attempt to lighten the mood. He smiled, but it didn’t quite meet his eyes.

God.

He was really scared.

He loved me so much… anything else we could figure out.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m just not as organized as I thought I was and I couldn’t find my wedding shoes.” I lied. He didn’t need to know warred with myself for an hour before leaving. Nor that I’d considered cannibalism five minutes ago.

He seemed to accept my explanation, and placed his hand on my waist, guiding me toward the rest of his family.

Enzo and Cullen were sitting at the back of the cabin, heads together over their laptops, voices lowered. They were obviously working on something.

I noticed Aidan staring just a fraction too long.

Did he wish he could be working instead of dealing with all of this?

We sat opposite Brianna in the middle section. She was sprawled across two seats, jean-clad legs kicked up over the headrests.

“Are you drunk?” I laughed, watching as she tilted her head back and drained her glass.

“Little bit.” She pinched her fingers together. “It’s not every day your best friend gets married.”

“It’s a onetime occurrence.” Aidan agreed, settling into the cream leather seat closest to the window.

“Why aren’tyoudrunk?”

“Well, I have to be able to walk in a straight line tomorrow.” I didn’t have a father, so I was walking myself down the aisle. Cullen had offered, but I’d decided against it. I already belonged to Aidan and had for the best part of twenty years. I didn’t need some ceremonial handing over to make that true.
