Last night he’d done a pretty good job of distracting me, but as I’d been getting ready this morning, the uneasiness had begun to creep back in again.

Tensions amongst our allies…

It could mean anything.

It could be nothing.

Or it could be a big fucking something.

I glanced back up when Bree didn’t say anything, noticing she was also chewing her lip with a guilty look in her eyes.

“What? What is it?” Did she know what he was hiding?

“I can’t tell you, he made me promise.”

“I can’t believe this. What the hell is going on?” I wanted to scream. I paced away from the door and dumped my flowers on the little table against the wall, trying to settle the raging rhythm of my heartbeat.

“It’s nothing bad, he’s just trying to protect you.”

“Well if it’s nothing bad, what’s he trying to protect me from?” I countered, glaring at my best friend. How could she be in on this? How could she not tell me?

He’s her brother.

Family loyalty had to count for more than best friends, right?

Urgh!

I couldn’t be mad at Bree, so I focused all my anger on my future husband instead. He’d put Bree in a shitty situation, asking her to hide things from her best friend. That was a dick move. How could I marry someone that would do something like that?

“He loves you, so much, Cait. He just wants this day to be perfect and drama free and not spent worrying about what’s going on back home.”

I sighed.

Bree was right. We’d been waiting for so long for this, he probably just didn’t want to give anyone a reason to cancel…

“Alright, fine,” I said after a moment’s consideration. The faster I married him, the sooner I got to know. Right?

That’s a shitty reason to marry someone.

“You’re going to do it?”

I sighed, grabbing my flowers and returning to the door. I loved him, and that was all that mattered. We could figure out the rest later.

“Yes.”

Bree seemed to sense it wasn’t wise to say anything else, because she moved to take her spot in front of me in silence. After a few moments, the music surged as the piano player meandered into Pachelbel’s Canon in D and the small crowd of guests rose to their feet, all turning to look at me in synchronization.

Bree took her first few steps, and when she reached the end of the deck and hugged her brother, I stepped down onto the patio.

I spotted my cousins first, but the second I caught eyes with Aidan, everything and everyone fell away. Despite everything he was hiding, despite my doubts, there was only him.

He was going to be my husband in just a few minutes. Mine. Forever.

The music softened to a halt as I reached him, and handed my flowers to Bree. She took them with a grin, but I saw the anxiety in her eyes. She was worried I was about to blow everything to pieces.

Was I?

No.
