It was fun to toy with them and know they were going to let her get away with it. Sometimes it was enjoyable to be a bit of a brat without the guy getting steamed. Too many tough guys took themselves so seriously. You’d think her Marines, being surrounded by hard asses all day, would in turn be hard asses when it came to some harmless play. But no, they seemed to be enjoying the flirtation. Summer had had her share of guys before who were all stoic and macho—until the second their frail little egos were ever so slightly bruised. Then they’d turn into petulant little boys.

But these two weren’t like that at all. It was such a big relief. Since the boys lived on the base, the three of them headed over to Summer’s condo. The moment they were through the front door, the tension shot up. Summer felt her anticipation rise as her skin became flushed. One of those places was her cheeks, which were no doubt a bright shade of red by the time they’d made it through the door. One of the pitfalls of being a blonde with fair skin.

Yes, she was nervous. She’d never had a threesome before, and these two were still practically strangers. She decided to trust them, let them prove that they deserved it. It wasn’t too late to change her mind and send them home with nothing but actual coffee and a goodnight peck on the cheek.

“Come and sit on the couch,” she cooed. “Would you like anything to drink? I think I might need another glass of wine.”

“I don’t suppose you have anything a little stronger, do you?” Lucas asked.

“Something stiff?” Summer asked as she poured her wine. Okay, maybe she’d had one or two at the restaurant with her rich, creamy pasta. But Chase had offered to drive them all for that very reason.

“Well, I think we might have that covered for you,” Lucas replied without missing a beat.

“Oh, come on, that one was too easy,” Chase said as Summer left the kitchenette and walked across the open plan living area to the couch. The two men sat at the far ends of the three-seater, strategically leaving a place for her to sandwich herself between them. So, she did. They were still a little too far away to even be touching.

“So, in all seriousness, I pride myself on being a good host. Y’all have to tell me if you actually want a drink or not? I’m afraid I don’t have anything harder, but there are a couple of beers leftover from when my father visited with his new wife.

“That sounds great,” Chase grinned. “How about I get them?”

Summer nodded and thanked him. Lucas slid over closer to her and asked, “So, your father has a new wife? Does that happen often?”

“That is a little forward of you, isn’t it? Assuming that my father doesn’t have the best track record with relationships.” And just like that, she’d overshared without meaning to.

“I didn’t mean to imply anything. It’s just how you said it, like you weren’t all that happy about the new wife.”

“Well, she’s barely a decade older than me. Nice enough woman though, and she makes him happy. But why do you want to talk about my daddy?”

“I’m just making conversation,” Lucas said.

Now that Summer was the one being loose with her words, it seemed to have disarmed him a little. She hoped that he wasn’t all bark and no bite with the ladies man facade.

After they’d finished their drinks and chatted a little, Summer was wondering why neither of them had made a move. Surely that’s what they wanted. Were they seriously waiting for her to do it? That just wasn’t going to happen, no way.

Chapter 8

Chase

“So, uh, we have something we’ve been wanting to tell you,” Chase said eventually. It was again odd that he was the one who was being upfront about things. The silent, serious stuff was more his forte in their friendship.

“Oh?” She waited for one of them to kiss her or at least slide a hand down her leg.

“You might be wondering why we’re hesitating right now,” he continued. His eloquence was sometimes impressive considering how awkward he was prone to being. “We’re shipping out of Camp Lejeune soon. At the end of the month, actually.”

“Oh, I see.” Summer was crestfallen.

She didn’t know what to say. Or why they were telling her this now. It’s not like they were seriously dating. They could’ve just made their move and things would’ve been fine. She felt trapped suddenly, like feelings were becoming involved in something that was meant to just be an erotic fantasy.

Well, a relationship was always the end goal for her. That hadn’t worked out yet, clearly. But just for tonight she would have been more than content living a fantasy and working out the details later.

“Why are you telling me this?” she asked finally.

“We just thought it was your right to know that we won’t be living in Jacksonville for too much longer. You know, before we do anything.”

“I see ... Oh, well, that’s kind of sweet of you two. But what makes you think I want to do anything anyway?”

Her lips curved in a wicked smile and she folded her arms in front of her chest, crossing her legs. Her body language felt strange and completely cut-off. But she knew the look on her face betrayed the lie that her crossed arms and legs told. She’d pretend to be hard to get.

Chase gave a mock shrug. “Don’t you? Because I think you do.” He leaned in and put his hand on the back of her neck, firmly but with tenderness, and pulled their faces together for a hot, slightly wet kiss.
