Yes, she’d definitely have to invest in a pair of high heels if she started a relationship with him.

The thought slammed into Audrie, and she immediately chastised herself for it. No, she wasn’t going to fall for anybody, and especially not a guy from out of town. It would be just her thing to fall for him because he was leaving. She always tended to pick relationships that were doomed. It was her way of protecting herself from really opening up to someone.

“There’s a bunch of food left.” Jessica shoved her chair away from the table and stood. “We would have waited for you, but you’re kind of late.”

Audrie frowned. What was that all about? Combined with the glare, Audrie was at a loss. One thing was clear, though. Jessica wasnothappy with her.

“Sounds good to me,” Landon said. “Let’s go.”

“Wait!”

Audrie was following him toward the food when Jessica’s voice stopped both of them. She turned to see the actress still standing just feet from the chair she’d occupied seconds ago, arms crossed over her chest.

“I thought we were going to get together tonight,” Jessica said, her gaze firmly focused on Landon.

Just as she did in her salon, Audrie kept her expression neutral. What she really wanted to do was raise both eyebrows and turn and look at him with her jaw dropped.

“I’m a little tired,” Landon said. “And I just got in touch with the guy who’s going to deliver a horse in the morning. I have to be alert, so rest is what I need.”

“But I really need to go over that stuff with you, especially with the horse scene coming up.”

Jessica was actually pouting as she said those words. Behind her, the very people who’d just surrounded her were watching this exchange with amused expressions.

“What’s going on?”

The voice behind Audrie caused her to spin around. At the same time, Landon’s body shifted slightly so he could see who was behind them. But he no doubt immediately identified it as his brother’s voice. Audrie would know her sister’s voice anywhere, and she assumed it was the same for brothers.

“Rourke,” Jessica said to their newest dinner guest. “I’m just trying to get a meeting with your consultant here. You said we have that whole horseback riding scene coming up, and you can’t get the stunt double here on time…”

“Oh, right.” Rourke slid his confused stare over to his brother, who’d no doubt just been trying to get a few minutes to himself after a long day of hard work. So much for that.

“I’m sure Landon has time for you whenever you need to meet,” Rourke said. “But it has been a long day for all of us. Maybe the two of you could get together over breakfast tomorrow after Landon helps me with the horses.”

“Do we have time for that?” a voice Audrie recognized as Michael’s called out.

“We have that scene with Peter first thing,” the script supervisor said. “We could juggle some things around, but we’ll need Jessica on set by mid-morning, no matter what.”

“The perils of being a lead actress,” someone at the table called out. He was the guy who’d been holding the boom mic.

Jessica didn’t even acknowledge that the guy had spoken. “Great,” she said, her gaze fixed determinedly on Landon. “Give me your number, and I’ll call you when I’m out of hair and makeup.”

“No need for that,” Rourke jumped in to say. “That’s what production assistants are for. Or we’ll send Landon to track you down when he’s available. Now, are we eating or what?”

Audrie had been starving just minutes ago, but all this drama made her appetite vanish. She felt a little sick. In fact, there was something about the way Jessica glared at her and pouted at Landon. Jessica had her sights set on him for some reason. Was there a history between them? If so, it was none of Audrie’s business. It wasn’t like she and Landon were dating or anything.

“Sorry about that,” Landon said once the two of them were side by side at the buffet table. His brother had gone ahead, blasting down the line and piling his plate with as much food as it would hold. “She wants me to help her with her character.”

Yeah, Audrie had figured out that much. She wondered if Landon suspected there was a hidden agenda.

“Duty calls.” She smiled at him. “Maybe you can improve her mood while you’re at it.”

He shook his head. “Doubtful.”

“She seemed to be enjoying herself tonight, though,” Audrie said. “When I walked in, she had a group of people around her looking at her adoringly.”

Was that catty to say? Probably. But she had a feeling Jessica thrived on male attention. She might not be interested in Landon as much as challenged to get him interested in her. If she even got a whiff that he was attracted to another woman—say Audrie—she might only try harder to get his attention.

“Yes, well, it’s a moot point, anyway.” Landon sighed. “Not much can improve her mood, and I get to consult with her in the morning.”
