He grinned. “Not totally alone.”

“I’m not saying you never get laid, dope. I’m saying you been on your own, no old lady, for a long time. That can eat you up.”

“Yeah, but so can hooking up with the wrong woman.”

Vanessa laughed. “Well, at least you have a candidate now. She might be right or wrong, but she definitely wants you, and you find her attractive, too.”

“Yep.” There was no point in explaining he wasn’t emotionally attracted.

Vanessa kissed his cheek. “I’m going to the club, too. You coming, Choirboy?”

“Yes, dear,” he said with faux meekness before waving at him and Jett and following his old lady.

After Vanessa had leftthe garage, Jett settled himself on a stack of tires and watched as Ronan went back to work.

“So what’s bugging you?” Ronan asked him.

“Nothing really. Just figured you’d want the scoop about Sheila. She’s hot.”

Ronan shrugged. “Yeah.”

“She’s good in bed, though we didn’t click beyond physical. It just wasn’t happening for us.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

Jett sighed, feeling frustrated. “You aren’t really attracted to her, are you?”

“Why, because you had her first? Would that bother you?”

He snorted. “Not likely, brother. I just don’t believe your routine. Vanessa and Sheila might buy you’re into her, but you ain’t. I can tell because I know what’s wrong with her.”

Ronan frowned. “Oh, it’s her, not you, that’s the problem?”

Jett grinned. “We were both the problem together, but that’s not what I mean. She’s not Tessa, and that’s why you aren’t interested.” He knew he’d pegged it when Ronan froze before slowly nodding. “She’s a nice girl, as far as they go around here, so I don’t want you to hurt her. Truth is, Sheila deserves better than a guy who’s thinking about someone else, and you’d be thinking about Tessa.”

“Yeah.” Ronan’s shoulders slumped. “How’d you know?”

“Because I’m thinking about her too. All the time, brother. I think it’s time we made a move.”

Ronan shook his head. “She’s not going to be into it.”

“Maybe not, but don’t you want to find out?” Jett let the challenge hang between them as he got up from the tires. “We can strategize together or separately, but I know you want her as much as I do.” He didn’t need Ronan to answer to confirm that.

“Damnit, Jett, wait.”

He paused and turned to his friend. “Yeah.”

“You aren’t thinking this through. For one thing, we don’t know if she’d even consider letting someone like either of us get close. She’s from a different world, and she’s just getting over the shock of me being who I am, or you who you are. She isn’t used to bikers, ex-cons, and other riffraff, and I definitely qualify for two out of those three categories, with an option on riffraff.”

“But you’re a nice ex-con biker who is possibly riffraff, whatever that is.” Jett winked. “Besides, I’m not a con.”

“Only cuz you’ve never been caught,” said Ronan with a chuckle.

He shrugged. “True. I still say we have nothing to lose by finding out how she feels.”

Ronan held up a greasy finger. “There is one other complication, a solid reason for taking our time and figuring out what we’re doing. And it’s one even you will understand. If we do push things, and if we were to convince her to hop into bed with us and it ends badly, there would be ramifications beyond hurt feelings.”

“She has a jealous old man?” Jett didn’t like that idea. He could share her with his brother-from-another-mother but not some random shit off the street.
