“I guess it would please him to know that. I doubt he sees it that way, though.”

“No, and I’m not stupid enough to tell Rafe or Max to call off their brothers, either. They watch Gemma, too.”

“That’s good.”

“She thinks it’s neat, having all these guys keeping tabs on her. Her girlfriends are jealous.”

“At least all the shit isn’t bothering her.”

“I think she knows more people in the club than I do.”

“Well, the girl doesn’t have a biker of her own now—does she?”

“I guess not.” She frowned. “I think she’d be too young for any of them.” It had been a concern at first, but she knew the guards who often accompanied Gemma, and they were all in relationships. Plus, they treated Gemma with sisterly affection, and she hadn’t observed anything hinky about any interactions. She didn’t think one of them would try to get with Gemma, especially under the circumstances. They seemed to have their own code of ethics, and she doubted dating underage girls was in their creed.

“Look, it’s a pain, but you need to tough it out, and you have some help.”

“I’m waiting for the next shoe to drop.”

“It will.”

“You sure know how to make a girl feel better, Sam,” she said sarcastically. She was sure it would. The question was how long it would take and if she’d go crazy waiting for it.

He shrugged. “I ain’t here to blow smoke up you’re a—chimney, girl. It’s a serious threat you need to take seriously.”

“I am.” How could she not with Brad having caused so much trouble?

The next morning, she woke to a loud and insistent pounding on her front door.

Thinking of the guys’ concerns, she slipped her cell phone into her pocket as she dressed, then went down to see what the fuss was all about.

When she peeked out through the spy hole, she saw a large, beefy man. He was overweight and his face was flushed. He wore work clothes.

It was a puzzle. She’d never seen him before.

As she stared, he started shouting. “Open up, whore!”

“Who the hell are you?” she called.

“C’mon, Simone. I’m the man of your dreams. You know exactly who I am.”

This wasn’t going well. Simone pulled out her cell phone. She thought about calling the police, but even though the man was a nuisance, she couldn’t call this a real emergency. The problem was, if it evolved into an emergency it would be too late to call.

Her training kicked in. Don’t show fear. Stay in control. She also remembered her instructor’s admonition, which echoed what Rafe had said. “When in doubt, call for backup. Don’t be a hero if you don’t have to be.” As she hit Rafe’s number, since it was numerically before Max’s in her call history, she addressed the man at the door. “Go away. Get the hell off my porch. I don’t know you.”

“You want to know me, though. You sure want to know me.”

Rafe answered, and she held up the phone as she spoke to the man. “What the hell are you doing beating on my door, and what the hell are you talking about?”

The man looked frustrated. “Let me in and I’ll show you exactly what I’m talking about, bitch. I saw your profile and here I am—the answer to your dream.”

“What profile? What dream?” Suddenly she was afraid she had an idea what he meant. He had to be talking about one of the websites, one they didn’t know about yet. Someone had put something online to make this man think she wanted strange men to come to her house and screw her.

“C’mon, stop fucking around. You’re looking for a man who knows how to treat a woman like you, and here I am. You like a man who takes what he wants. You need a hard cock, and I’ve got one for you. Open this door, and you can fight back all you want. The more you struggle, the better I’ll like it.”

She nearly gagged. “I didn’t post anything like that anywhere.”

He laughed. “Of course not. You want to be forced. You like to pretend you’re such an innocent. I’ve seen the videos, and I’m just the guy to make you do all the nasty shit you won’t admit to wanting out loud.”
