“I appreciate it. Let’s survive this first.”

Max foundGemma at her computer, pretending to pout. “Simone’s accounts are empty. She’s sad.”

“Of course. In a short time, bank fees will start piling up.” Max stretched his arms over his head lazily. He sat across from her in front of his own laptop as Rafe took a free seat. “So we need to fix that.”

“How?”

Rafe laughed. “Well, as I understand it, the problem is that the accounts are empty.”

“Like I said.”

“Then we probably need to put money back in them.” Max winked.

“Yeah, but like, where do we find that kind of money?”

“Well, what happened to her money?” asked Max.

“Brad took it.”

“And we’re sure, right?” Rafe grinned.

Gemma nodded. “Triple checked.”

“And he put it in his account?” Max sounded more easygoing about that than he was truly feeling.

“Yup.”

“Then why don’t we see about making a withdrawal from his account?” Rafe chuckled.

Gemma brightened. “We can do that?”

Rafe nodded. “As long as Simone doesn’t know the sneaky stuff I’m teaching you, we sure can.”

“All right.”

Max tapped on the screen. “I’m sending you some account numbers and passwords. We want to do this indirectly so there isn’t a clear trail to let him know what we’ve done.”

“It would make it harder for him to trace what we did if we delete his accounts when we’re finished.”

Max was impressed with her cunning. Rafe laughed. “You, young lady, have a devious mind. I like it. Okay, I’m creating accounts in a couple of offshore institutions. I’ll send the info to you in a minute. Just go to the transfer money tab and dump the money from Brad’s accounts into them… Split it up. Then we’ll send the money between the two, and finally into Simone’s accounts. The transfer will be marked as a reversal of the original withdrawal to correct a funds transfer error.”

“Why?”

Max said, “So if the IRS wants to know where the money came from, it will be clear that it was hers in the first place.” He looked at Rafe for confirmation, and his mentor nodded.

“Awesome.”

“Yes, it is. And here is a fun fact—I downloaded some stuff from Brad’s laptop a while back, and when I sorted through it, I found the account name and passwords for a couple of other bank accounts. In all fairness, once Simone’s account is put right, we should probably empty those as well.” Rafe chuckled.

“Take his money?”

Max grinned as Rafe said, “No, but I think in his heart Brad is probably a generous man. I think he’d want his money to go to whatever charity you like.”

“Oh, the animal shelter. They always need money.”

“Excellent. While you finish your job, Max and I will undo the credit card cancellations.” He looked at a clock. “Wow, it’s getting late.”

“It’s Friday night. No school tomorrow.”
