I look over to the EMT. “Can you give us a minute?”

“Yeah.” He nods reluctantly. “Five minutes, then we need to leave. You need to get scanned, Mrs. Sinclair.”

When he hops out, the guy from moments ago knocks on the open door. “I don’t want to interrupt, but I wanted to tell you they took Bash to the hospital and I’m gonna head over there soon.”

“What happened to Bash?” I ask, having no fucking idea what’s going on.

“I’m Sam Beneventi, Bash’s brother. I’m sure Annabelle can fill you in. But if you want to find me, I’ll be at the hospital. I’d say nice to meet you, but not really, considering...” He looks around the yard, then back at Belle. “Have you seen Snow White?”

“Who the fuck is Snow White?” I ask the two of them.

Tommy answers from the foot of the ambulance. “That’s what Sam calls Amelia,” then goes right back to his game, like they’re all old friends.

I look between Belle and Sam. “What the hell is Amelia doing here?”

“Excuse me,” the EMT walks back over and interrupts, “but we really need to get to the hospital. If you’re coming with us, hop in. But only one person can come. If not, you’ve gotta get out.”

I look at Belle, who shakes her head no. “Please stay with Tommy. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I brush my lips over hers but have a hard time forcing myself to move. I glare at the EMT who won’t let me just bring Tommy with us. “Keep her safe,” I growl before I get out.

Tommy tucks Rex under his arm and holds my hand. He looks between Sam and me. “Is Bash okay?”

“He’s gonna be fine, kid. Chicks dig scars,” Sam tells him.

Tommy puts his headphones back on, hits play on his iPad, and then his hand goes right back to mine.

“What the hell happened?” I ask Sam as my dad and Dino make their way over to me.

Sam glances from me to the two of them. “Uncle Dino. What the hell are you doing here?”

Dino smirks. “We’ll talk later. Where’s the girl?”

“The dead girl or the one who shot her?” Sam asks matter-of-factly.

“Who shot who? Can somebody tell me who’s dead?” I spin when a hand comes down on my shoulder.

A detective dressed in khakis and a sports coat with a badge hanging around his neck is standing behind me. “Mr. Sinclair, I’m Detective Schultz. I’m sorry to do this now, but we need to ask you a few questions.”

“No,” Dino tells him. “He’s going to the hospital to be with his wife. He’ll come down to the station tomorrow.” He places himself between the detective and me.

Detective Schultz acquiesces and gives me his card. “If you think of anything or want to talk before then, give me a call. My number’s on the card.”

I look around at the people surrounding me. “I need to get to Annabelle.”

Sam motions to Bash’s black Hummer. “I’m leaving now if you want a lift.”

“Yeah, man. Thanks,” I tell him.

“I can take Tommy with me,” my dad offers.

“No. I’ve got him. I just want to get to the hospital.” I shift toward Sam. “Can we leave now?” I ask, impatient to get to my wife.

Sam nods and walks away.

Dad watches Sam leave, then turns to me. “Call if you need anything. Katherine is going to pick me up here, and I’ll find you at the hospital as soon as I can.”

“Thanks, Dad.” He hugs me quickly, and then Tommy and I get into Bash’s car.
