Not directed toward us, but there’s something there.

“Sam Beneventi. Who are you?” He cocks a dark brow.

Ahh... So he is Bash’s older brother. Which means my initial thoughts were pretty close. Bash’s family is the Philadelphia mafia. Sam Beneventi has the dangerous, sexy stranger thing going for him in spades. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to let him know that. Instead, I tell him, “I’m the girl who saved your ass.”

“Yeah... right. So, what’s the story?” Sam looks around at the three of us.

I take a deep breath and center myself before I answer, “The story is the truth. I was coming to meet my friend to go to a football game. I heard shouting, so I went to the side door. It was wide open. I looked inside and saw her slash Bash across the stomach, then aim a gun at tall, dark hitman here.”

I didn’t think. I reacted.

I did what needed to be done.

But now that I’m looking ahead to what comes next, it’s starting to hit me.

Dealing with the cops.

Knowing my new identity has worked for years is one thing. I’ve got bank accounts. I’ve got a driver’s license. I’ve got all the things you need to establish a new identity, thanks to George and his connections. But we never planned on me having to deal with the police. I look around at the three of them and realize they’re waiting for me to finish. “Well, you all know the rest. She aimed it at him, but I’m faster and have a better aim.” I look at Belles. “It was self-defense.”

“Why did you have a gun?” Belle’s skin is pale, like she’s about to pass out.

“Where did you learn to shoot like that?” Bash asks.

“Self-defense” is the last thing I say before red and blue lights flash and an entire police department descends, coming to a stop in front of Belle’s house.
