“I need you to sit down and listen to me, Amelia.” Sam’s blue eyes have lost the sparkle they held earlier.

The caring man who worshipped me this morning is gone.

The warmth of that man has been replaced by ice.

“Just tell me. Whatever it is, we’ve already established I can handle it. And you’re better off telling me now rather than beating around the bush.” Instead of sitting, I rest my hands on his hips and step into him. “I won’t break, Sam. You’ve always told me I need to trust you. Now, it’s your turn. You need to trust me.”

One strong hand tips my chin up to him. “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve you, but I’m never letting you go.”

“Good. Now, what’s going on?”

He strips out of his sweats, kicks them to the corner of the room, and walks into his closet I assume to put on a suit. “Sam...” I’m interrupted by his phone ringing. Again.

“Sam... your phone.” I reach across the bed and grab it from where he tossed it as he walks out of the closet. Pants on but unbuttoned. Shirt on but hanging open.

It’s like he’s my very own Ken doll this morning, and I’m seeing all the outfits he has to play with. Unbuttoned, sexy businessman may just be my favorite.

“Snow,” He looks at me, waiting. “The phone?”

Oops. I toss it across the room, not wanting him to miss the call, but it falls through his hands and lands on the rug. I guess my aim sucked.

A voice echoes through the speaker of the phone. “You’ve got my brother, Beneventi.”

A familiar voice.

A voice from another lifetime.
