When everyone lifts their glass but me, Becks’s eyes zero in on my lack of a flute in front of |me. “Since when do you pass up champagne, Scarlet?”

Lenny elbows him. “Leave her alone, Becket. She can’t have champagne.”

Fuck. “Lenny.”

Realization dawns on her face. “Shit. Sorry, Scarlet.”

“Have you ever kept a secret in your entire life?” I should have known this was coming.

Even with my eyes closed, I can feel everyone’s attention on me. I straighten my back and lift a fork full of Belgian waffle to my mouth, ignoring them all.

You can hear a pin drop, the room is so quiet.

Even Maddox and Madelyn are quiet.

“Something you care to share with the rest of us, Scarlet?” The strength of Max’s stare demands I meet his eyes.

I swallow my waffle, then wipe my lips with my linen napkin. “Actually, yes.” I meet his eyes and steel my spine. “I’m pregnant.”

When Amelia announced she was pregnant last year, there was cheering, hugging, and congratulations. That’s not what’s happening right now. My heart sinks as my siblings continue to stare at me until Hudson wraps his big arm around my shoulders and squeezes. “Are you alright, Scarlet?”

“I’m fine, Hud. I might not have expected this, but that doesn’t make it any less incredible.” I reach up and squeeze his hand as I force my voice to remain calm and not give way to the disappointment taking hold deep in my soul over everyone’s reaction.

The questions start coming at me all at once until Max speaks over everyone else. “Who’s the father?”

“I only just found out last week, Max. I was planning on telling the father before I told all of you.” I throw a little shade my sister’s way as I add, “Apparently, that’s no longer an option.”

Lenny has the decency to at least grimace, like she feels terrible for outing me to everyone.

Maybe I should make her tell Cade so I don’t have to do that either.
