Knowing he can’t ignore it, I slide my legs from his waist and watch as he pulls out his phone.

“Shit. It’s your brother.” He silences the phone and moves to put it back in his pocket. “He can wait.”

“He’s called twice. It might be important.”

He answers his phone with an annoyed groan, and I take the minute to pull myself together. Watching him walk across the room gives me the distance I need to clear the fog of lust from my head.

What the hell was I thinking?

After a minute, he walks back into the kitchen, lines of frustration pulling at his face. “Duchess...” Those talented hands reach for me, but I step away.

Both of us try to speak at the same time.

With Cade telling me, “Becks set off the alarm at Crucible.”

As I say to him, “This shouldn’t have happened.”

His long legs easily swallow the space between us, and one hand grips my face. “This should have happened, duchess. This was always going to happen. You were mine all those years ago, and I was a stupid fucking kid who didn’t know what to do with you. Well, I know now. And you’re still mine, Scarlet.”

His thumb runs over my bottom lip. “But I’m not gonna beg.” Cade kisses my forehead and drops his hand from my face. “Let me know when you’ve accepted it, Scarlet.” He places one hand on my still flat stomach. “In the meantime, you’d better get used to seeing me. Because while you take care of everything for your players and your company, I’m going to be taking care of you and our baby.”

I rest my hand over his, letting those words sink in.

“Let me know when your brain catches up to what I already know.” He turns to leave, but I stop him.

“And what do you think you already know?”

He doesn’t turn around as he answers, but there’s no mistaking his words. “You’ll know when you figure it out.” Cade opens my door but stops and looks back at me. “I’m stopping by Crucible on my way home. I’m telling Becket about us tonight.”

“Cade...”

“I’m telling him everything.”

Then he walks out of my condo.

Leaving me frustrated.

Completely caught off guard.

Turned on.

And maybe... just maybe, a little bit hopeful.
