I stop Jax from going after Hud. “Don’t. He’s not wrong. Can you hold the fort down here for a little while?”

He slaps me on the back. “Yeah, man. Do what you gotta do.”

Once I’m in my truck, I call Scarlet’s cell phone and get forwarded to her office.

Her assistant’s voice greets me, “Good morning, Scarlet Kingston’s office. This is Connor.”

“Hi, Connor. I need to speak with Scarlet.”

“Sorry, she’s not available right now. May I take a message?”

“This is Cade St....”

“Mr. St. James. Ms. Kingston should be out of her meeting in fifteen minutes and has a two-hour opening after that.”

I sit there, waiting for him to continue, but he doesn’t. “Do you always give out Ms. Kingston’s schedule so freely, Connor?” That idea doesn’t sit well with me.

“Only for people who are good for Ms. Kingston, Mr. St. James. And between the two of us, I think you’re one of those people. So don’t take this the wrong way if I say she hasn’t had lunch yet and loves the balsamic tomato salad from Bagliani’s on Second Street.”

Well, shit.

The kid’s actually looking out for her. “Thanks, Connor. You like anything from there?”

“I’m good, thanks. You may also want to order an unsweetened iced tea with no lemon. Oh, and Becket and Lenny usually jump in when we order from there.”

“Not today, Connor. Any chance you can help me out and block the next hour in Scarlet’s calendar?” It’s worth a try.

A second goes by. “Done.”

“Thanks.”

That’s how I find myself sitting outside her office thirty minutes later, while Connor calls to let her know I’m here.

“Your next appointment isn’t for an hour and a half, Scarlet.” Connor glances my way with a grimace. I guess she isn’t thrilled that I stopped by, judging by the side of the conversation I can actually hear. “No. That’s tomorrow.” He pauses a minute. “Right. Okay, great. I’ll show him in.”

Connor hangs up the phone, a victorious look on his face. “She’s a bit grouchy today, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

When I stand, I take a long look at this guy who barely looks old enough to not be considered a kid himself. “Thanks for the help.”

He eyes me up. “Don’t make me regret it.”

One more person who’s protective of Scarlet Kingston.

I can respect that, even if it would drive her crazy.

But what all these people don’t realize is that she’ll never need another protector again.

That position’s been filled.
