“Wait... Can you repeat that?” I stand from the couch and look down at my brother. Waiting.

He stands and places both hands on my shoulders. Uncertainty is written all over his face. “I want you to take over as president of the Kings, and I’ll move to the Revolution. You know the organization better than anyone else. You’ve been beside me all along. Everyone in that building is a part of the King Corp. family. It’s the same job, but with less stress over the next year or two. And let’s face it. Those are important years. Bring your daughter to the office. Hell, convert one of the floors to a daycare center if that’s what you want. But raise her in that building the way we were.”

“Max...” I sigh. I don’t even know what to say. And I’m never speechless.

“It’s the same job, Scar. But with less trouble and aggravation coming your way.”

I take two steps and wrap my arms around him. “But then, you’re the one taking on all the trouble and aggravation. That’s not fair to you.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’m going to give myself a raise.” He laughs a sardonic laugh and pulls us both down to the couch. “Teach my niece she can run a billion-dollar organization. Teach her she can be anything she wants. Let her see how amazing her mother is. I might be the head of the family, Scarlet. But you’re the heart. You just don’t want anyone to know it.”

My lower lip trembles as I try to hold back the full-on sobs that threaten.

“But I know it. I see it. Take the damn job, Scar. We’ll legitimately be across the street from each other. We can do this... If you want to.”

I grab the pale blue pillow next to me and squeeze it to my chest. “Of course, I want to. It’s the only job I’ve ever wanted. I can’t believe you’re just going to hand it to me.”

Max picks up his beer and finishes his bottle. “The only thing we’ve ever been handed is our last name. Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently. We’ve worked fucking harder than everyone else to get to where we are now. You’ve earned it. It’s yours. But lunch is going to be on you when I need to get away from those assholes.”

“They’re not the enemy.” At least, I hope they’re not. “But if they are, just remember three-hundred-pound linemen fear me. I can make some hockey players and their management fear me just as easily.”

“Yeah. I’ll keep that in mind. Now on to more important matters. Who’s getting custody of Becket?”
