He nods. “Thanks for your help, Taylor. I appreciate it.”

He appreciates it.

Why does that burn like a bitter pill?

“No problem. Scarlet told me you owe her lunch for a week.” She turns her eyes back to me and doesn’t hide her quick appraisal as her eyes drag over me from top to toe. “I like your dress. Chanel?”

“Vintage.” Lucky for me, I moved all my mom’s old clothes over to Dixon’s house before I started this job. At least I’m not standing before her in one of my favorite thrift-shop finds. And damn, if I don’t want to smack myself for thinking that. Lord. What is wrong with me? I can’t get out of my own head today.

“Daphne?”

I look up to see Max staring at me.

Guess I zoned out for a moment. “Sorry, what were you saying?”

“Glad to have you back, Ms. Brenner.” His dark blue eyes twinkle with the laughter he’s smart enough to keep to himself. I guess he can read a room after all because, boss or not, amused or not, if Max Kingston laughed right now, I may scream... or hit.

I’m not a violent person by nature, but a girl can only take so much before she explodes.

And annoyed or not, that’s not the type of explosion I’d like to explore with Max Kingston.

I may not want this job, but I certainly need it, so I flash him a smile. “Glad to be back, Mr. Kingston.”
