We stare at each other for a few moments before he moves through the door, then turns and runs his hand over my hair. “Daphne...”

“No, Max. You told me last week you don’t want to play games. But honestly, it feels like you’re playing with me, and I don’t appreciate it. Figure out what you want.”

He leans in to kiss me goodbye, but I turn my head at the last second.

Watching Max walk to his car feels permanent. Like something is ending. And I hate it.

Once I confirm Luka is in the driver’s seat, I close the door and slide my butt down to the floor.

Dammit.

“D?” Mads comes around the corner of the stairs, having obviously not gone back to bed. She sinks down to the floor next to me. “What happened?”

“I think I hate him, Mads.” I lean my head on her shoulder.

She wraps her arm around me. “Really?”

“No.” I wipe the tears away. “But it’s easier than admitting I’m falling in love with him.”
