I just don’t have the patience for it.

Quinn picks everything up fairly easily, and I’ve still had to fight the urge to do it myself.

And right now, Max is leaning over her desk, looking at something on one of Quinn’s monitors. I should probably feel bad that, from my new desk, I have the perfect view of his ass while he does that. But I don’t. Not even a little bit.

“Okay, so I’m planning to blast the information on Start A Revolution’s socials today. Have you asked Max if you can post on the socials for the Revolution yet?” Mads offered to help me with the social media for Start A Revolution as a favor, and I jumped at the offer. She hums for a minute then adds, “And maybe mention to him they need a better social media manager. Their branding leaves something to be desired. Oh, and I also confirmed with the Kings marketing team that they’ll be sharing on their pages since you have so many of their players in the auction on Saturday.”

As if the man in question can sense we’re talking about him, he stands and makes his way toward my office with a sexy smile on his face.

“Hold on, Mads. Max is right here.” I wave him in and put the phone on speaker. “Maddie’s on the phone. She’s volunteering her time and social media skills for Start A Revolution.”

“Yeah.” Maddie’s voice comes through the speaker, and Max drops down into the seat across from me. “And you need some serious help with the Revolution’s social media presence, Max. It’s kinda boring, especially compared to the Kings. They’re posting for us tomorrow and Friday.”

“Really?” He stands and moves around behind me to look at my screen. “Daphne, can you pull up our social media accounts?” He leans over me, and goosebumps break out over my skin when he grabs my mouse and scrolls down. “I see what you’re saying, Madison.” He hits the mute button. “Who does our social media now?” He looks down at me from the corner of his eye with a crooked grin.

“I’m pretty sure one of the interns is doing it.”

He unmutes the phone. “Hey, Maddie? Do you want a job?”

“Umm... what?” Her voice cracks, and I hide my laugh. Typical no-nonsense Max.

“The Kings’ social media presence is great because we have someone in-house who handles it. The position is full-time, with the understanding they need to be at 80 percent of the games and events throughout the year. Apparently, we don’t have that here at the Revolution, but we need it. How about I have Human Resources send you a formal offer letter? Can you look it over and get back to me by the end of the week?” There’s silence on the other end of the phone. “Maddie?

“Umm... Is it too early to accept?” Maddie’s not even trying to hide her excitement.

“Look over the offer, Madison. Check out the salary and the benefits first. Then accept.” He kisses the top of my head, shocking me. He’s never done that in the office before. “I’ve got a meeting now, but you should have the paperwork by the end of the day.”

Maddie and I both thank him, and I watch him leave.

“D?”

I recline in my chair and sigh. “Yeah, Mads?”

“Your boyfriend just gave me a job. With benefits.” She claps her hands with giddy excitement. “In case you weren’t sure, I’m officially Team Max now, D. I’ll make t-shirts if I have to. Don’t let that man go.”

Maybe that needs to be the plan, Mads. Maybe...

Willow buzzes my phone a little later, and my smile grows. Going from the assistant to having one, even if she’s just an intern, is pretty damn cool. “Hey, Willow.”

“Daphne, a man is on hold for you. He says he’s your dad but didn’t have your number. Should I put him through?”

“Yes,” my heart hammers in my chest. “Please put him through.”

Even knowing who she was connecting, I’m still not prepared when I hear, “Daphne?” from my father on the other end of the phone.

I don’t respond.

“You sure managed to go from assistant to director in record time.”

I try to swallow down my anger. “How did you know?”

“The directory listed your new title. Congratulations. I know it’s what you’ve always wanted.” My father’s disdainful tone, combined with his words, breaks the final string connecting us. He should have been the one here for this.

“If you want me, you know where to find me, Dad. Don’t call me back here.” I hang up on the man I’m no longer sure I ever knew and ask Willow to block any future calls from him. I refuse to let him affect me anymore.
