‘You feel amazing...’

Alex had never felt this connected to a soul in his life. He wanted to savour every moment of the feeling. He took his time. Moving slowly, languorously.

He was always in control, but she was making him lose it. Dissolving all the strings that kept him so rigidly in place. Making him question why he’d ever thought he could live without this. This wasn’t sex. It wasn’t fun. It was love. And he was drowning in it.

Alex could feel Emma climbing. She was bearing down on him. Her gasps coming in quick, almost musical pants. And then her body arched and she shattered around him, moaning incoherently. Unable to breathe and completely overwhelmed.

Alex kissed her hard as he rode her through her release and into his own as it crashed into him. His moan was quiet. Ragged. Vulnerable. Their lips were still connected. He pushed all the way into her silken depths, unable to disconnect himself from her.

Looking down at Emma, he saw tears run down the sides of her face. He brushed them away but said nothing.

Because he felt it too.

They had been irrevocably changed.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

THESKYWASonly just lightening to a deep blue when Emma woke. After a few sleepy blinks she felt her brain catch up, and remembered the events of the night before. Every night with Alex was great, but last night had been soul-consuming. She knew he’d felt what she had—it had been clear in his eyes.

So when she looked over and saw that his side of the bed was empty, she got an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. He had woken up with her every day they’d spent in London. In that little fantasy bubble.

Emma dressed hurriedly in the clothes she’d worn the day before. She would have to leave soon, if she had any chance of going home to change and still getting to work on time. Not that she was keen to. The confrontation with her family was still fresh in her mind.

She found her shoes in the library and slipped them on before rushing downstairs, where she found Alex.

‘There you are.’

He placed a mug of coffee on the counter for her and she took a grateful sip before kissing him. It didn’t feel right.

Emma gathered her things. There was a message from Hannah on her phone.

Lucky is fed. Heading out early.

Emma chuckled at her phone. Her cat would no doubt be upset that she had spent another night away. But it was nothing he wouldn’t forgive with a few tasty treats.

She noticed Alex was being unusually quiet.

‘Alexander? Are you okay?’ she asked, holding the mug in her hand.

‘Of course. Why?’

‘Well, you’ve only said three words to me. Usually...’

Usually he wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off her.

Usually he had a flirty smile for her, or a naughty wink.

‘Emma.’

She didn’t like his tone.

‘Can we talk before I leave for work?’

‘What do you want to talk about?’ he asked. She could smell his tea from the other side of the counter.

‘Last night was...’ Words failed him.

‘Yes, it was,’ she said quietly.
