Pulling my clothes out of the duffle bag, I smiled. Tate had packed exactly what I would have picked for myself. Everything from the comfortable sweater down to the bra and underwear. He’d even managed to grab my favorite pair of cozy socks.

Slipping on the clean clothes made me feel a fraction better, but anxiety still radiated out of my pores. Energy danced under my skin. I needed to move, to run. My muscles flexed and relaxed in fits and starts. Balling up the other clothes, I shoved them into the duffle bag and stepped outside.

“There you are,” Shado said, flashing me a smile. “Did he pick good clothes? Did he remember underwear?”

“Take this,” I said, thrusting the bag into her arms.

She gasped, catching the bag. “Wha—what are you doing? Where are you going?”

“I have to get out of here. I can’t stand still anymore. I need air. I need to go. I need to do something. I have to—”

“Woah, breathe. I’ve got an idea. Come with me.” She grabbed my sweater-covered wrist and towed me in the direction of the waiting room.

I wrenched my hand out of her grip. “I can’t just sit in the waiting room, Shado. Not while he’s…”

My heart stopped. Tate and two of the younger wolves were exiting the room with a nurse.

“What’s going on? Is there news about Jack?” I demanded.

Tate jumped at the sight of me. “Jesus, you scared the bejeezus out of me.”

“Is there news about Jack?”

“Yes, there is. He’s still in surgery, but Isaac needs more blood.Familyblood,” he explained.

It took me a second to realize he meant werewolf blood. They could give Jack all the human blood they wanted, but it was pack blood that would really help him heal.

Shado draped her arm around my shoulder. “Go, we’ll be here.”

My body trembled. I tried to make it stop, wrapping my arms tight around my chest, but it only got worse.

“Hey, it’s gonna be okay. He’s gonna be okay,” Shado murmured, rubbing her hand in small circles over my back.

I inhaled a shaky breath. “He has to be. I don’t know what I’ll do if he’s not.”

Magic rumbled under my skin, buzzing along my arms. It wanted me to use it, but I didn’t have a clue what to do. After the teleportation spell I cast to get Jackson to the hospital, my body was physically exhausted. Doing anything more would be dangerous, but I needed to find the shifter. I needed to flay the skin from her bones for what she did to Jackson. I wouldn’t be able to rest until I found her.

“Uh, calm down, Rebekah,” Shado said. “I can feel your aura shifting in a bad way.”

“When I get my hands on that shapeshifter,” I said, my voice dangerously low. “I’m gonna kill her.”

“Not right now, you’re not. Jack needs you here.”

“I—” She was right. I couldn’t go blindly racing off into the city, not until I knew Jackson was alright. Once he was stable—

“Why don’t you sit down, close your eyes, and try to relax?”

I shook my head and started to pace. I couldn’t sit in that waiting room, and I couldn’t leave to go hunt the shifter. All I could do was wait, but the waiting would drive me crazy. Jackson always said meditation helped clear his mind. That it allowed him to focus on the important things and stay in control.

Two things I needed very much at the moment. Even if it didn’t work, it would at the very least keep me busy until he was out of surgery. I looked at Shado and sighed. “Let’s go find the chapel.”

Shado gave me a blank look. “You feelin’ religious all of a sudden?”

I shook my head. “I’ve got too much raw energy rushing around in my system. I need to meditate. Ground it back into the earth or something. And I need to be normal for Jackson when he wakes up, or as close to normal as I can get.”
