Elouise

The soundof breaking glass jerks me out of a dead sleep.

“What-” I rub at my eyes and see Beckett’s already on his feet. “What was that?”

“I’m gonna go see,” he reaches down pulling his jeans on, “stay here.” I start to climb out of bed, but he aims a finger at me. “Stay here, Elouise.”

There’s another round of shattering glass, and now that I’m awake it sounds like it’s coming from right outside.

“I’ll stay,” I agree. “But I’m not gonna just lay in bed while you go investigate.”

Beckett moves to the window, and pulls back the corner of the curtain, “Goddamnit.”

“What? What is it?” I step up next to him and peek out, not sure what I’m looking for.

“Some asshole broke the windows on my truck.”

My eyes move over to the driveway and sure enough, the windshield is covered in a spiderweb of cracks and the passenger window is smashed to bits. As we both stare, the red glow of brake lights flare from just out of view, followed by the unmistakable sound of a car driving off.

Beckett sighs, “Well that sucks.”

I rest a hand on his back, feeling a little shaken up, “Why would someone do that?”

He shrugs and I see him open the keypad on his phone and type in 9-1-1, “Who knows. Probably some punk kids. Since I don’t have a description, I doubt they’ll catch whoever did it, but I’ll need a report for the insurance.”

“I’m sorry, Beckett.” I lean into his side. “People are the worst.”

“Thanks, Babe.” He presses a kiss to the top of my head before hitting call. “Go back to bed, you’ve got work in the morning.”

I doubt I’ll be able to fall asleep now, but I have nothing helpful to add so I climb back into bed and listen to his side of the conversation while he explains what happened.

I pull the blanket up closer to my chin.

This is such a small community, and I know bad things can happen anywhere, but randomly breaking someone’s car windows… It’s just so weird. And pointless.

Laying back against the pillows, I close my eyes and let Beckett’s voice settle around me.

I barely even remember coming to bed, there’s just a foggy memory of stumbling from the couch to the bedroom. But I do remember the feeling of relief that washed through me when Beckett said he was staying the night.

A warm hand settled over the blanket against my chest and my eyes flutter open.

Beckett presses a kiss to my forehead before giving me a soft smile. “Sleep. I’ll be back up to join you soon.”

“Okay,” I yawn halfway through the word, accepting that maybe I am tired enough to do what he’s asking.
