“Elouise!”

I take three sprinting strides after her car, before I accept that I’ll never catch them on foot.

Turning, I run as fast as I can to my truck, dialing 9-1-1 as I fumble with the door handle.

The call connects, “What’s the nature of your emergency?”

“Someone has her- they’re in the car with her!” I don’t even recognize my voice.

“Sir-”

“Elouise Hall is being kidnapped,” my heart shreds as the words pour out of my mouth.

My truck fishtails as I floor it out of the drop off zone.

“I don’t know who-” I choke on the admission.

I don’t know who has her.

I don’t know who has my Smoky.

My Darling.

I spin my wheel, pulling onto the main road where I saw her last, and manage to bark out a description of her car.

“Officers are on their way. I need you to remain-”

“South on Coastal Drive!” I shout, catching sight of Elouise’s car again just before it disappears around a turn.

The road she’s on now leads out of town. The road is windy and narrow as it follows the edge of the lake, and it’s secluded.

I blow through a red light.

I can’t see her.

If they get far enough ahead of me, whoever has her could make her turn down a side road and… and…

My breaths are heaving in and out of my chest.

I can’t see her.

“Sir, please don’t pursue -”

I hang up the call, and dial Elouise again.
