“NO!”I roar.

Coldness fills me as I watch Elouise’s car flip off the edge of the road. Her lights illuminate each roll until they vanish into the water.

“No! No no no!” I speed the last hundred yards then skid to a stop where her car disappeared.

I leave my truck angled across the road as I run on numb legs.

“Elouise!” I shout her name, skidding across the gravel at the edge of the road.

The ground gives way to a steep muddy slope, and I slip, dropping onto my ass as I slide down towards the lake. I come to a stop at the edge of the water and I frantically kick my boots off.

Her headlights are still lit under the water, telling me exactly where I need to go. But it looks impossibly far away. The momentum of the roll threw her further away from me.

Sloshing through the first few steps, I dive into the freezing water, the bottom of the lake dropping out beneath me.

I swim until I’m right above the vehicle and my heart seizes when I see that the car is upside down.

Taking one deep breath, I dive under the surface, just as the headlights go out.
