“You fucking scream again,” the guy hisses, “and I will gut you like a piglet, you fucking whore.”

Hands yank me up, grab the back of my hair in a fist, and that stench in my face is back as he says, “You make a sound, and I will break every fucking bone in your body.”

Maddy’s shoutacross the beach comes like an echo.

“Guys!” She is running toward us. “Someone screamed in the jungle!”

She is panting. Bo and I pause and start walking toward her.

“Someone screamed in the jungle,” she repeats. “I am not sure it’s anything. But—”

“Where are the girls?” I bark. “All of them!”

Bo and I start trotting.

We’ve been here before. Shouts are not fun when they come from the jungle.

“Is everyone accounted for?” Bo asks as he gains speed.

I see a pack of girls coming out of the garden, all of them looking around.

But I am looking for one.

Callie.

Maddy trots behind us. “Callie and Dani went for a walk.”

My heart slams in my chest.

“Walk where?” I ask, not realizing I am shouting as I trot.

Maddy looks at me with her scared eyes. “Up the path to the waterfall.”

And I am running like I never ran before.

“The workshop!” I shout to Bo though I don’t look at him. “I’m taking the guns! Get the guys!”

Adrenalin spikes so high that I fly like the wind.

Workshop. Crates. Three legit guns. They are loaded. I don’t bother with the rest. Time is precious.

As I whip out of the workshop, I shove one of the guns at Bo, and another at Guff, who is next to him.

“The Savages!” Bo roars.

I hear shouts, girls calling the names, and guys running from all directions.

But my eyes are on the waterfall path as I dart barefoot toward the opening to the jungle.

I run like a motherfucker. My heart races. Blood pounds in my head.

Hold on.

I don’t know who I am talking to, but I pray this is all a misunderstanding.
