“Yeah.” She chuckles. “Wanna tell me what this is about?”

Katura takes slow steps closer, studying me with that prying stare that seems to pierce me and extract my thoughts.

I look down at my feet and dig the dirt with the sole of my sandal. “I used to go to Deene.”

“Right. That’s where a lot of the Westside comes from.”

“Right. So did Kai.”

“Right. But something went sour.”

I look up at her. “Why would you say that?”

She rolls her eyes, then throws her head back and exhales in frustration. “This is excruciating.” She looks at me again and cocks her head. “You glared at each other like the worst enemies when we got here. You avoided each other for days. And suddenly, you are cuddling away in his bungalow.”

“Whatever.” I hate that Kai and I are so obvious. “It’s just… The guy who runs the Westside…”

How much do I tell her?

“Yeeeeah?” Katura mocks me now. “Come on, girl.” She rolls her head, seemingly annoyed. “Spill it already. You know him, don’t you?”

I finally give up. “I used to date him.”

KATURA

Well,fuck.

I take in a deep breath. I want to laugh, but can’t because the blondie is visibly uncomfortable. And there is waaaaaay more to this story. I can feel it in my gut. Sunshine Ty didn’t spill the beans no matter how I coaxed him, so it must be important.

Then something dawns on me.

That makes sense. There is no way Callie was chosen to come here for her looks or skills. Psychology major—sure, useful. Not! There are better candidates. Uncle showed me the applications of those who were chosen to come to Zion. I studied them. Callie had—maybe, and that’s a stretch—a thirty percent chance. One in a thousand.

But here is the trick.

The Chancellor is her ex.

I stare at Callie as she stares at me with some sort of apology in her eyes.

Now I know Mr. Chancellor’s type. Pretty. Blonde. Gentle. Though as per stories, he is in about anything that moves. But now I know about his ex. And I can surely work with this. The fucker will give out the info I need under the light pressure of my foot on his Adam’s apple. Star quarterback or not.

“So why are you not there?” I ask, trying to fish out more info.

It’s strange. I would have run to my ex in a heartbeat if he were in charge of the island my survival depended on. I would have sucked his cock and fucked him. As many times as he wanted. And had fun doing it, too.

But not this girl.

“We had a falling out,” Callie says, avoiding my eyes.

I laugh. Jesus, getting her to tell the story is like pulling teeth. “C’mon. Don’t take me for a moron. Falling out, my ass.”

“Well…”

She goes quiet, and I can’t handle it.

“Just fucking say it already! You lost it all and you still choke on boy memories. Seriously!”
