I shake my head. “No, you didn’t.” I smile. “We are fine. We are here. Together, right?”

I want to hold him. I want to wrap myself around him and protect him from everyone and everything. I lean over and rake my fingers through his hair, slowly and gently, pressing my face to his neck, inhaling him.

“You feel so good,” he whispers, barely audibly.

His hands slide down to rest on my hips, and we stay like this for some time, in silence, as I stroke him softly, wishing I could take away his pain.

The maids come with a first aid kit, a small tray with plates covered by lids, and what looks like a set of clothes. As if we are guests, like Katura says. Except guests are not thrown into a fighting cage. They are not dragged bloodied to a holding place. They are not promised another fucked-up entertainment the next day.

I brush the thoughts away, knowing that this is not the time.

“I have to get you in the shower before I treat your wounds,” I say with as much authority as I can and pull Kai by the hand to stand up.

He growls in pain but follows me to the bathroom—the same design of the previous room with an open-concept shower.

“I know you’d rather lie down and sleep, Kai, but we have to clean you up,” I say.

His jaw and cheek are bruised, his brow is split, and his lip is swollen. But those are the only damages to his face. Unlike Archer, Kai got most of his injuries on his body.

He exhales heavily and leans with his back against the wall for support.

Any other time, I would’ve let him do everything himself. I would’ve turned around as he undressed. But now, he is my responsibility—or so I think with pride as I start unbuttoning Kai’s jeans.

“Petal, you are taking me by surprise,” he says with a chuckle as I hook my thumbs under the waistband of his jeans and boxers and pause, looking up.

His beautiful dark eyes are smiling. He doesn’t look so tired anymore. His hands come up to my face and cup it as his smile grows bigger.

“We’ve had our share of surprises lately, huh?” I say quietly, unable to restrain my smile, my heart pounding as I slowly pull his jeans and boxers down his hips.

My bravery dies right there, but I don’t show it. I push his jeans lower, and his bruised lips curl in mischievous way when he doesn’t make an effort to help me.

So I look down—his erection right there.

Jeez, do men get turned on over just about anything?

Blushing, I push his jeans lower until he starts moving his legs, tugging his clothes down and kicking them off.

“Hold up, soldier,” I say with a smile as I walk to the shower and turn on the water, waiting a moment until it’s the right temperature. “It will hurt.”

I watch Kai as he slowly steps into the shower, and the water starts cascading down his hair and back as he grunts in pain.

He is magnificent—a dark angel.Myangel. I hold my breath, studying his muscled body. The water at his feet is colored with streaks of red.

Shit.

“Wanna join?”

I look up, meeting his gaze that burns with the familiar heat.

My heart gives out a strong thud.

I should walk away and give him privacy. I should look at that first aid kit. But right now, I want to be with Kai every living moment, however many we’ve got, however painful they are.

So I strip out of my clothes, watching him run his hands over his body slowly, hissing in pain, then step behind him and run my hands over his shoulders.

He stiffens at my touch. I glide my gaze down his body, noticing more blood streaking the water at our feet.

“I’m sorry, Kai,” I say and press myself against his naked body, slick with water, my cheek flush against his back.
