When the song changes, Callie tilts her head to look at me. I can’t see her face very well in the dark, but it’s inches from mine, her whisper grazing my skin when she says, “I will never let you go, you know that, right?”

I smile, kissing her nose, because her bravery is cute and endearing.

“I mean it, Kai. If something goes wrong, I will burn this island to ashes. I will do awful things to Archer. I will make sure this place sinks—”

I shut her up with a kiss, hungry and demanding, because I don’t want any “ifs” right now. I need her by my side. And I need a lot of fucking faith and determination.

When we let each other go, I take her hand in mine and hope that where we are going will give us a minute of privacy. And my cock is hard, wanting to bury itself in Callie and fuck every tiny piece of doubt out of her. Untimely, yeah, since we are on the run, but what are you gonna do when the last four years were a rollercoaster and now you get one last chance to do things right?

“Where are we going?” Callie asks, now sounding more curious than worried.

I smile.

That’s another thing about sex. Endorphins and oxytocin make you more optimistic and determined.

Yeah. I need to have her.

“Almost there, baby girl. Just keep an open mind.”

Yeah, we need it as fucking open as possible.

I think of Candy again.

Life is strange. People are a mystery. Candy and her girls sell their services and info to pretty much anyone who is willing to pay. Yet, she is the one person right now I can trust.

We reach the familiar street, but I don’t go straight—the Venus Den will be packed—I go around the building to the back and spot the familiar tall bulky figure of the security guy.

He studies me coldly as we approach. He’s seen me before. He doesn’t like me or anyone from the resort, but he doesn’t have to—his boss is Candy.

“Tell Candy she has a visitor from the Eastside,” I tell him.

He takes his time to push off the stool he’s planted his ass on for the last who knows how many hours and lazily walks inside through the small metal door that’s too short for his height.

A minute later, the door opens, and Candy’s silhouette fills up the door frame.

“Well, well. Who would’ve thought you’d make it?” She gives Callie an appraising look and smiles as she takes a long puff of a cigarette. “No wonder you went through all this trouble.” She winks at Callie and nods for us to follow her inside.

I glance at Callie to see her reaction, and she smiles.

ARCHER

I don’t understandwhat’s happened when I open my eyes.

I am on the floor.

Did I faint?

Slowly, I sit up.

It’s too quiet around. But there were people before. Droga and…

Choking… Someone was choking me.

I jump to my feet, looking around, and my eyes stop on Katura Ortiz, who sits leisurely on the couch, her feet crossed on top of my motherfucking coffee table.

My heart slams in my chest.
