“You are a great artist.”

I study him for a moment, summoning the courage for another confession. “I drew you, you know.”

“You did?”

“Soooo many times.” I laugh, rubbing my cheek on his shoulder. “It was quite an obsession.”

He dips his head so he can look into my eyes. “Really?”

I nod. My smile falls. “Before and… Even after that night, you know, during those four years. I drew you.”

His forefinger traces the outline of my eyebrows, then slides down my cheek.

“I want to draw a portrait of you one of these days,” I say. I love that we are talking like we are planning our future.

“I’d love that.”

“Full body.”

“Sounds good.”

“Naked.” I purse my lips to hide a smile.

He takes my chin between his fingers, narrowing his eyes at me. “Petal, you are provoking me.”

“Not at all.”

“On one condition.”

I arch an eyebrow.

“That you will be naked too, doing it.”

We both grin, and Kai brushes his thumb over my bottom lip, wiggling his eyebrows and making me blush.

Dammit, will I ever stop blushing in his presence?

He kisses me, and I wish this moment never ended, but the knock at the door pulls us apart.

Smiles are gone.

It’s a reality check.

The sound is like a judge’s gavel slamming on his desk.

We both know it’s time to go.

Port Mrei is still asleep, but there are enough wanderers and hustlers to disguise our footsteps as we skirt the buildings, taking the back alleys toward the port.

It’s an hour or so before dawn, and the town feels eerie with occasional dogs barking here and there, a rooster already crowing in the distance, and a lone muffled Mariachi song seeping from one of the windows in the wooden two-story villa we pass.

There are two armed guards walking down the street that we turn into, and I halt and back off, pulling Callie behind me.

My pulse spikes.
