But nothing happens as my bike crosses to the paved road that marks the beginning of Ayana.

Nothingever happens to me.

It’s a curse. While everyone around me fucking leaves. Or dies.

I’m fine.

I am fine.

Always.

Fucking.

Fine.

I got some frustration out on this wild ride, and it’s under control as I pull up to the doctor’s office.

Life goes on. At least for now.

Doc meets me with a quick glance at my drenched clothes, narrowing his eyes on my arm—right, the wound, a through shot that needs to be stitched.

“Where is he?” I ask.

In-patient rooms are attached to the office.

We walk through the hall into a corridor that’s lined with several doors and smells of antiseptic and cleaning agents. Doc opens one of the doors and I walk in, shoving my hands in my wet jeans’ pockets. The pain in my shoulder is growing, but I try not to pay attention to it.

“He is sleeping,” Doc says. “But he is stable. If we’d waited another day, the infection from the wound could’ve killed him. They don’t have strong enough antiseptic on the Eastside.”

I nod, studying Bo, who is fast asleep on a hospital bed with an IV in his arm and a heart monitor softly beeping in the deafening silence of the room.

I gave the orders to bring Bo here the day after we attacked the Eastside. It was one of the guard’s fault and a no-brainer that Bo needed medical attention.

Doc eyes me suspiciously. “Is that a wound?”

My whole body stings from being in salt water. “I’ll get you to look at it later, Doc.”

“You need to eat,” he says. “And slow down on booze. I want to do blood tests, too. You don’t look good.”

Whatever. I wave him off, though my head starts swimming as if in agreement with his words.

“Archer,” says a soft voice from the corner.

I turn to meet Maddy’s tired eyes. She gets up from the chair and takes a step closer.

“Maddy.” I nod, catching sight of the island-branded shorts and shirt. I completely forgot to give orders for her accommodation. Doc must’ve thought of it.

She came with Bo that very day, wanting to make sure he was fine, and probably stayed in the hospital the entire time. She needs a place. She won’t leave until Bo is stable.

Another thing on the to-do list.

I like Maddy. I never had a problem with her and wondered why she left for the Eastside in the first place. She has family back on the mainland. Not sure why she doesn’t go back. She should work with Doc. We need people like her.

“He is fine. Stable,” Maddy says softly, her gaze concerned. “Good thing you got him when you did. Thank you.”

“I’ll tell housekeeping to arrange a place for you to stay,” I say, pushing off the doorframe. “I need to talk to you, too. Later tonight. When you have time.”

I am about to walk out when Doc blocks my path and nods toward a chair. “Sit down.”
