Then she reaches around the back of my head and pulls me toward her. When her forehead is flush against mine, she grazes my lips with her own. “I love you, Luka. For everything you are and everything you’re going to become.”

What I’m going to become…

Damn. That could go very dark very fucking fast. She has no idea.

My phone rings, AC/DC blaring from the speaker just as I crush my lips against hers. I grab it out of my pocket.

“Yeah?”

“Luka, it’s me.”

“Boris, thank fuck.” I clench the phone tight in my hand. “I need to come by with Nik. I found a list in my dad’s safe. Natasha’s name is on it, along with a bunch of others. I think it has to do with some kind of a takedown, something Ivan Resnov is leading.”

“Luka, that list…you need to…” A sputtering cough follows, and Boris rasps for breath on the other end of the line.

“Boris? Are you there?” My throat tightens. “Talk to me. I need to know what my father was going to do with that list. What did he know?”

“I can’t help you anymore, Luka. Stay away from here, do you hear me?”

“What the fuck are you talking about? You know something, otherwise you wouldn’t have given me that envelope.” I grit my teeth. “I need information. I have a family to protect, goddammit. Tell me what I need to know.”

“Just stay…away.”

He groans, but it’s muffled, like background noise. Like he’s now far away from the phone.

“Boris, what the hell is happening? Are you okay?”

After a long pause and a lot of white noise crackles in my ear, another voice speaks. It’s sinister, thick, and heavily accented. “He’s fine. For now. But how long he stays that way is up to you, Luka.”
