“Yeah, and what is your job, exactly? Because I don’t see you ever making the hard decisions. You dick around with your clubs and your restaurants, fucking everything in a skirt, but where are you when the real work needs to get done?” I stop and flip around with a sneer. “Oh yeah. That’s right. Anywhere that’s out of the shit.”

“What were you doing in Dad’s office?” he says. “Looking for some way to redeem yourself after driving this family into the ground one time too many, Boss? Or did you find out that I’m right, and your hot little captive really is the bait that’s gonna destroy everything?”

I lunge for him, my pulse hammering against my throat. I grab the sides of his shirt and slam him against the doorway to the kitchen. “Don’t you say another fucking word about her.”

“I’ll do worse than talk shit about her,” he bites out, struggling against my hands. “And you know it.”

Nikolai pulls me off of Taras, shoving me backward. “Enough of this bullshit. Pot, fucking kettle. We have bigger problems to handle right now. You wanna sling dicks? Do it after we figure out what the hell we’re dealing with.”

After quickly telling Taras about the letter from Boris and the list we found, I pace the hallway outside of the kitchen and fist my hair; so many unanswered questions popping between my ears like bullets.

What if Taras is right? What if Natasha really is the bait and has something to do with Val going missing?

But why would her name be on that list? What the hell does it mean?

Is someone trying to protect her?

Or kill her?

I scrub my hands down the front of my stubbled face.

And which of those jobs did I just inherit as the new boss of the Malikov family?
