Playing it cool, Finn raises his eyebrow but doesn’t answer.
“Come on, man. I know there’s someone. You’ve been stomping around here, brooding, all year. Suddenly you’re a chipper son of a bitch and you’re gonna try and tell me that the sudden change has nothing to do with the fact you’re getting laid on the regular?”
My mouth drops open in shock as I slowly turn to look at Finn. He was miserable all year like me. I mean, I know I was hurting after I woke up and found him gone. I guess I didn’t realize he was, too. I didn’t give much thought to how he was doing, assuming he was getting along fine since he walked away from me.
“It’s just, Lo, man. You can tell me in front of her. Unless …” His voice trails off, but before either of us can defend ourselves, he finishes his sentence. “Do we know her? Is that why you’re keeping it a secret?”

Looking at Finn, I try to communicate with my eyes.
What are you waiting for? Say something. Cover our asses. Lie!
“It’s just new, that’s all.”
“I’m happy for you. Honestly, I was worried you wouldn’t find someone. Girls hang all over you and you never spare them a glance. Whoever she is, she must be special to have caught your attention.”
“Very,” is all Finn says before popping the last of his bagel in his mouth, chewing slowly as he stares at me.
Is he trying to make it obvious?
“Bring her to the Memorial Day party. I want to meet this chick,” Max says, sliding off his stool. “If she can put a smile like that on your face, I know I’m going to like her.”
They share a bro-hug, pat each other on the back, and then Max is out the door. It’s barely closed before Finn sweeps me into his arms and carries me down the hall into his room.
“Smooth, Finn. Real smooth. Now he’s expecting you to bring a girl to the party with you. A girl that’snothis little sister,” I say as he places me on my feet.
“Looks like we have two weeks to figure out how to break the news to him then,” he replies, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me tight against his body. “Until then, I can think of a few things we could do to keep this smile on my face.”
I bet he can.
