“But that was—”

“I don’t care who it was, and honestly, I don’t want to know. That’s a visual image I’ll never be able to erase.”

My phone buzzes in my purse. When I pull it out, I find a text from Kendall apologizing and giving me the all clear to come inside. Hesitant, I slowly open the door, peeking my head inside to find the living room empty.

Finn follows me straight into my bedroom where I close and lock the door behind us and text Kendall back.

ME: Didn’t mean to interrupt. We’re in my room if your friend wants to leave. Or whatever. He can stay.

K: He’s going to leave. Things are awkward now.

ME: Okay. Just let me know when he’s gone, and we can talk.

K: I never want to talk about this ever again. Ever.

Me either, girl. Me either.

Finn wraps his arms around me from behind as I plug my phone in to charge. I turned it off last night before I went to bed, so it didn’t die since I was unprepared to stay at my mom’s. Not that I was able to sleep after my conversation with Max. I was hoping Finn would slip into my room and hold me, but he didn’t.

“I need a nap,” I confess.

“Me, too. I slept like crap. I’m too tall to sleep on that couch.”

“I was expecting you to crawl in with me last night. What happened?”

“I wasn’t about to disrespect your parents’ house. Plus, your brother was asleep on the other couch. If he woke up and I was gone, how would I have explained that?”

Good point.

Finn tugs me toward my bed, pulls back the covers, and we both crawl in fully clothed after kicking off our shoes. Tucking me against his body, Finn kisses my cheek and is asleep in a matter of minutes, snoring lightly in my ear. It doesn’t take me long to follow his lead, his warm embrace and the steady rise and fall of his chest making me feel safe.

My phone ringing wakes me with a start. The first thing I notice is that Finn is no longer in bed with me. The second, it’s still light outside, meaning he couldn’t have left that long ago.

“Hello?” I answer, not bothering to look at who’s calling.

“Have you seen Finn?” Max asks.

Looking at the time, I notice we’ve only been back in town for about two hours.

“He dropped me off a little while ago. Why?”

“I just got home and he’s not here. Wait.” There’s a long pause, and then Max says, “Never mind. He just walked in the door.”

“Okay. You boys have fun. I’m going to go back to my nap.”

“Why are you sleeping? It’s the middle of the afternoon.”

“Because I didn’t sleep well last night,” I counter, laying my head back on my pillow only to be poked in the ear by something. When I turn my head, I find a folded piece of lined paper.

“What kept you up?” Max asks.

“Nothing, I just think I drank that special amount where I was still wired. Not quite drunk but not sober, ya know?”

“Yeah, I get that. I didn’t sleep that great last night either.”

Good thing Finn was smart enough not to sneak into my room then. Max would have surely caught us.

“You’re just pissed Evie made curfew and looked just as beautiful walking in the door as she did out. I know you were looking for a reason to yell at Joe.”
