Page 53 of Dirty Little Secret

When I see who’s calling, I chastise myself for not paying more attention to the time. He said he would call when he got here. Between cooking and dancing, the time got away from me. If I’d known it was this late, I would have made it a point to shoot him a text, let him know not to make the trek over just yet.

“I’ll explain later.” I take my phone and rush into my room, answering as I close my door behind me. “Hey.”

“I’d ask if you’re having fun, but I can hear the music and laughter from downstairs,” Finn says, a hint of laughter in his voice.

“Movie night.” It’s not really an answer but it’s all I say as I sit down on the edge of my bed, taking a sip of margarita as I will my heart to slow its frantic beating. Piper won’t say anything, I know this, but still, I feel a small panic attack coming on.

Our secret is out there. Someone else knows. The chances of other people finding out before we’re ready are now greater.

The chance of Max hearing it through our little grapevine of friends if Piper does say something—

“Piper and Alexis?” he asks when I don’t offer more of an explanation, lost in my head.

“Yup.”

“Want me to come back later?”

I want nothing more than to feel his warm embrace. For him to wrap his arms around me and calm the thunderous roar of my heart. Knowing it’s close to midnight already, I contemplate what I want versus what is right. The girls will more than likely be leaving soon. I’m sure they called an Uber to take them back to the dorm. They both have class tomorrow, and as easy as it would be for them to just stay over and get up early, I know they won’t. They never do.

“I don’t know,” I reply honestly as I set my margarita on my bedside table. “I want you here, but I also know the girls won’t leave for a little bit and you shouldn’t have to wait in the hall.”

“So … I can’t come in?”

He could. I mean, if Piper hadn’t seen he was calling me, neither of them would have given his presence a second thought. But now …

“I’m not ready to tell them yet,” I confess.

Why? I have no idea.

This is real, I remind myself. Nothing is going to change how you feel about each other.

“Okay,” he replies, not an ounce of remorse in his voice. “I’ll be at the frat house with your brother all day tomorrow if you want to swing by. I know he’s been asking for you to come over. He wants a girl’s opinion on a few things and doesn’t trust anyone else. You should take him up on it, and if the opportunity presents itself, maybe I can take you somewhere quiet while he’s not paying attention.”

The idea causes a shiver to run up my spine. Sneaking around right under Max’s nose. Where we could get caught at any second, by him or one of his frat brothers. It’s hot but also risky. With only a week left before we confess our sins in front of all our friends, it’s probably a better idea if we lay low.

“I’ll think about it,” I retort, refusing to accept or deny his proposal.

“I know I will,” he groans. “Sweet dreams, LT.”

And then he’s gone, hanging up before I can reply because he knows what he just did to me. He turned me on with only his words. He’s not even in the room and I crave his touch. His lips. His body wrapped around mine.

He’s both my sinner and savior.

And I love it.

Him.

When I rejoin my friends in the living room the credits are playing on the TV as they shimmy their hips to the music, picking up the mess we made. Without a word, I join them, dragging the coffee table in front of the couch. By the time there’s no remnants of our antics, Piper and Alexis are rushing out the door, laundry baskets in hand, to meet their waiting Uber driver.

“That was so much fun.” Kendall smiles as she drops onto the couch next to me with a plop. “I miss living next door to those girls. We always had a great time.”

“Me too. Freshman year was so much fun. I hated the dorms, and I’m glad we got our own place, but I’m so glad we met each other and Piper and Alexis. I can’t imagine living with anyone else besides the three of you.”

“You sure about that?” I know what she’s asking, and a blush creeps up on my face, her only answer. “You could have invited him in, you know. They won’t say anything if you ask them not to.”

“Yeah, but I’m not ready. Plus, Max deserves to know before I start telling everyone else.”

“You better get ready, then. Everyone’s going to be at the party next Monday when you two come out of the closet.”
